Katey Sagal is opening up about becoming a mother again through surrogacy. The “Sons of Anarchy” actress talked about welcoming her third child at the age of 52 and why she and husband Kurt Sutter decided to expand their family.
Talking on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast with Ted Danson, Sagal shared details behind making such a big life decision.
Katey Sagal Talks About Surrogacy
Sagal, 72, married Sutter, 66, in 2004, when she had recently turned 50. At the time, Sutter had no interest in fathering a child. Sagal was mother to daughter Sarah Grace and son Jackson, born in 1994 and 1996, respectively.
The “8 Simple Rules” star shared her two children with ex-husband, actor Jack White. Her first marriage was to musician Freddie Beckmeier.
Sutter eventually had a change of heart after “really talking about it” with his wife. According to Sagal, she and her husband had already discussed the possibility before he decided he wanted a child after all.
“My husband is six years younger than I am, and this is my third husband,” Sagal told Danson, “When we met, he was like, ‘I don’t want to have any kids.’ I was like, ‘OK, ’cause I have about five minutes left if you want to have kids.’”
The couple ultimately welcomed daughter Esmé through surrogacy three years after tying the knot.
“We did the surrogate process, and that’s what happened,” she revealed further to Danson. “We continue to live life; we don’t just fold up and die.”
Sagal has no regrets about welcoming her final child at the age she did. Instead, the “Futurama” actress feels grateful to have experienced motherhood all over again.
“I had a child at 52 through a surrogate, but I became a mother again at 52.”
Who Are Katey Sagal’s Three Children?
Sagal shares a close relationship with her children. The actress has been candid about how much they mean to her, calling them “my best work…ever” in an Instagram post.
The “Married with Children” actress has often spoken proudly about her children’s pursuits. In the podcast appearance, Sagal went at length about the paths they’ve taken.
“My older kids are both musicians and actors, and my oldest daughter has made the most beautiful record that she wrote and produced, and she’s amazing,” she elaborated on Sarah’s career. “And just to see the process of how you have to be able to market yourself now, like, where you’d have to pay [labels] back, but they’d give you money, so that you could just be an artist and they do all the selling
Sagal has similarly been enthusiastic about her son’s career. She appeared alongside him in the Hulu series “Tell Me Lies.” Sagal was excited about the collaboration, and praised the dynamic she shared with Jackson.
“So it was really fun for us,” Sagal told People. “We had never, we have sung together before on stage, but we’d never worked as actors together, and we have a super close relationship. We are not like Psycho Mom and Son. And it was really fun to put on different clothes to be these different people.”
All three of Sagal’s children now live close to her in Los Angeles, with Esmé currently attending college. While Sarah, 31, and Jackson, 30, are following musical and acting pursuits, Esmé, 19, is currently attending college.
