Keanu Reeves has teamed up once again with his “Bill and Ted” co-star, Alex Winter. However, this time it’s for a very different kind of project. The pair are starring in Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” on Broadway. They’ve also opened up about working together once again.
“We’ve known each other a very long time,” Winter told People. “It’s a play about two people who have known each other a very long time, which actually matters, I think, to the play. And Keanu had this crazy, inspired idea that suddenly turned into reality, for both of us. … It became a show we had to do.”
“This is the step into the reality,” Reeves said. “It’s fantastic.”
Winter also talked about what fans will see if they attend the Broadway show, saying, “I think every time the play is done, it’s different, because of who’s playing it. It’s very, very personal, and so we’re bringing ourselves to it.”
Reeves Says the Idea ‘Came from the Universe’
If you are lucky enough to see Reeves and Winter on Broadway in “Waiting for Godot,” you can thank the “John Wick” star. It turns out it was his idea to both take on the project and work with his friend and former “Bill and Ted” co-star. Or, according to Reeves, you can thank the universe.
“It came from the universe, and when it struck me it rang a gleeful bell, and so I asked him if he wanted to do it,” Reeves told the New York Times.
In fact, Reeves apparently FaceTimed Winter at “some ungodly hour” to first talk about the idea, according to Winter who opened up about the moment during a chat posted to the “Waiting for Godot” website.
Reeves & Winter Will Be Doing ‘Nothing’ Onstage
Reeves and Winter are surely ready to dazzle audiences on Broadway. However, thanks to the unusual nature of the play, they’ll be doing so in a quirky way.
“Celebrated actors Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are real-life friends who are starring on Broadway as two friends searching for meaning in an absurd world,” the play’s website explains. “Waiting for Godot is the greatest play ever written about nothing. Nothing and everything. But mostly nothing. Seriously, nothing happens.”
Reeves first time on Broadway will see him playing Estragon and Winter will appear as Vladimir in the play that sees them waiting for a figure named Godot. Directed by Tony Award winner Jamie Lloyd, “Waiting for Godot” is showing at the Hudson Theatre in New York City.
The rest of the cast includes Brandon J. Dirden who is playing Pozzo and Michael Patrick Thornton as Lucky, as well as Zaynn Arora and Eric Williams as boys.
The play will hit the stage on September 13, 2025, before officially opening on September 28. If all goes well, it will run until January 4, 2026.
