Legendary U.S. alpine skier Lindsey Vonn recently shared her first hospital photos and update following a devastating crash during the women’s downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy, giving fans a rare and personal look into her recovery journey.
Vonn Shares Another Update
Vonn, 41, was competing in what was expected to be a historic Olympic comeback — aiming to become the oldest alpine skier to medal in downhill — when her race took a shocking turn.
Just 13 seconds into the event, she clipped a gate, lost balance and crashed violently, prompting immediate medical response.
She was later airlifted off the course by helicopter and transported to a hospital in Treviso, where doctors confirmed a complex fracture in her left leg that would require multiple surgeries.
In an emotional Instagram update shared from her hospital bed, Vonn posted photos of herself surrounded by medical equipment and recovery supports, giving fans a glimpse of her resilience up close.
Clad in a hospital gown and giving a thumbs-up next to a frame attached to her injured leg, Vonn wrote that her third surgery was successful, acknowledging that “success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago.”
She added that while her progress is slow, she is confident she will recover and appreciated the outpouring of support from fans, family and teammates.
She also gave a shoutout to Team USA as they continue to compete at the Olympics.
The crash ended one of the most anticipated storylines of the Games.
Vonn Has Had an Impressive Career
Vonn, one of the most decorated alpine ski racers in history — with three Olympic medals and a record 12 World Cup wins in Cortina — had returned to competition after nearly six years of retirement and recent ACL surgery, inspiring fans with her determination.
Despite the setback, Vonn has made it clear she has “no regrets” about competing, embracing the risk as part of her journey and thanking supporters for their encouragement.
Her father, Alan Kildow, said the crash could mark her retirement from the sport — but also highlighted her mental strength and the comfort of having family by her side during recovery.
As Vonn focuses on healing, the photos and her message serve as a powerful reminder of her courage, legacy and the relentless spirit that has defined her career.
Many fans continue to send well-wishes as she begins the long road to recovery, celebrating not just her athletic achievements but her unshakeable resilience.
