Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck Recreate ‘Ferris Bueller’ Magic in Vancouver

Almost four decades after skipping school on the big screen, Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck proved their “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” chemistry hasn’t faded. The pair reunited at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, Canada, on Sunday, August 24, where they joined the crowd during the Vancouver Canadians vs. AquaSox baseball game.

Ferris and Cameron Reunite for a Baseball Game

Broderick, 63, and Ruck, 69, led the crowd in a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” according to photos shared on Instagram by both the Vancouver Canadians Baseball team and Lionsgate studios. Dressed casually in glasses and laid-back athleisure, the longtime pals looked like they hadn’t skipped a beat since starring in the iconic 1986 hit movie.

Back in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” Broderick starred as Ferris, the carefree teen determined to skip school in style, while Ruck played Cameron, his tightly wound best friend. One of the movie’s most beloved moments showed Ferris, Cameron, and Ferris’ girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) sneaking into Wrigley Field and shouting, “Hey batter, batter, batter, swing, batter!” from the stands. Seeing the two actors share a baseball moment nearly 40 years later felt like a nostalgic full-circle moment for fans who grew up on the film.

The classic also featured Jennifer Grey, Kristy Swanson, and Charlie Sheen in memorable supporting roles.

The Baseball Game is Not the Only Reunion Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck Have Planned

Turns out, this reunion goes beyond a fun night at the ballpark—Broderick and Ruck are teaming up on screen again. The two are currently filming “The Best is Yet to Come” in Vancouver, an English-language remake of a French film. The story follows a pair of lifelong friends who, after a big misunderstanding, set off on a bucket-list road trip filled with second chances and adventure.

Deadline reported that the film will see the characters track down an estranged son while trying to do all the things life has kept them from experiencing. On August 20, Broderick and Ruck were spotted shooting a scene from the movie, giving fans even more reason to celebrate their reunion.

Broderick has often reflected on the legacy of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” which launched his career at just 23 years old. During a 2023 appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast “It Happened in Hollywood,” he opened up about working with legendary director John Hughes.

“He was somebody who could get angry at you,” Broderick recalled, admitting the two had a brief falling-out during a costume test. “He was like, ‘Well, then, I won’t direct you at all.’ Until I finally had to say, ‘John, you have to direct me, come on.’ That was our worst one.”
