‘Ferris Bueller’ Stars Reunite for New Movie Nearly 40 Years Later: ‘It Felt Like We Hadn’t Stopped’

Nearly four decades after “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” became a defining comedy for a generation, two of its stars are teaming up again.

Alan Ruck recently reunited with his former co-star Matthew Broderick for a new film, bringing the beloved on-screen duo back together just as the iconic 1986 movie approaches its 40th anniversary.

Ruck Dished on Filming Again With His Longtime Friend

Reflecting on the reunion, Ruck admitted the experience felt surprisingly natural — almost as if no time had passed since they last shared the screen.

“It felt like we hadn’t stopped,” Ruck told People exclusively. “It didn’t, it didn’t feel like 40 years had gone by. So it was easy, you know.”

Directed by John Hughes, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” became an instant classic upon its release.

In the film, Broderick famously played Ferris Bueller, the charismatic high schooler who fakes being sick to skip school and embark on an unforgettable day of adventure in Chicago.

Ruck portrayed Cameron Frye, Ferris’ anxious and reluctant best friend who ultimately joins him on the wild day off.

The chemistry between the two actors became one of the most memorable elements of the film, helping cement its place as one of the most beloved comedies of the 1980s.

For many fans, Ferris and Cameron’s friendship remains at the heart of the movie’s lasting appeal.

All About the New Film

Now, the pair are bringing that dynamics back in an upcoming comedy titled “The Best Is Yet to Come.”

The project is written by Allan Loeb and directed by Jon Turteltaub.

It’s based on a French film of the same name and follows two lifelong friends whose lives are turned upside down by a misunderstanding that sends them on an unexpected journey.

In the story, Broderick and Ruck play best friends who set out on a road trip after a mix-up convinces one of them that his time may be limited.

Along the way, the pair attempt to reconnect with an estranged son while also chasing the dreams they’ve long postponed.

Ruck even joked about the timing of their reunion, saying it almost feels like a tradition.

“I think we made a pact to work together every 40 years,” he said. “So, so far so good.”

The actors were spotted filming scenes for the movie in Vancouver in August 2025, though Ruck confirmed the project has already finished shooting.

“We shot it already,” he added. “It’s done. It’s in post.”

A release date for “The Best Is Yet to Come” has not yet been announced, but fans of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” will likely be eager to see the longtime friends share the screen again.
