Nancy Guthrie Case: Former FBI Agent Says Suspect Likely an ‘Amateur Criminal’

A former FBI agent believes Nancy Guthrie’s abductor may be an amateur criminal now feeling the pressure of an intense, high-profile investigation.

Jonny Grusing, who spent 25 years in behavioral analysis with the FBI’s Denver Division, told Fox News Digital that he believes the FBI is likely behind Savannah Guthrie’s latest Instagram post aimed at the suspect.

Grusing thinks the masked suspect seen in the grainy surveillance footage does not appear to be a sophisticated criminal, and suggests that Savannah’s recent video may have been guided by FBI profilers in an effort to pressure the suspect into turning himself in.

“I think he got in way over his head with whatever happened with Nancy, and they’re hoping that he is panicking enough since his family and friends haven’t turned him in,” the former FBI agent told the outlet. “They’re appealing to him directly, like, ‘Look, guy, this is not going away, you just need to summon up the courage in any humanity you have left and do it.'”

Nancy Guthrie Case: Ex-FBI Details Why Suspect Appears Inexperienced

Grusing, whose experience spans decades, pointed to what he described as telling signs that the suspect may be an amateur. He noted that the man in the surveillance video repeatedly turned his head away from the doorbell camera and even tried to block its view, despite already concealing his face with a mask.

“If you look at him and the awkwardness of this guy walking up there, this guy is not a professional,” Grusing added.

The former agent also suggested that whatever transpired inside the house was not what the suspect had planned.

“So I don’t think whatever happened in the house is what he intended to happen,” he explained. “What I would say is that he didn’t plan for this sort of news coverage, for this sort of intense searching, for the FBI to come in, and for this to be going on two weeks later.”

Former FBI Agent Confident Suspect Will Be Caught

Grusing is confident that it’s only a matter of time before the suspect connected with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance will be caught.

“He’s going to be arrested. At one point, he’s going to get turned in, something’s going to break,” he told Fox News Digital. “So the SWAT team is going to come through his door, and I think that’s what they’re saying. Even if it’s not [an appeal to] his humanity, he needs to get the courage to turn himself in and be proactive with this.”
