“The Office” ran for nine seasons between March 2005 and May 12013, and during that time actor Rainn Wilson appeared as the quirky Dwight Schrute in the popular show. While the gig brought Wilson countless fans and plenty of opportunities, he revealed that there’s something he regrets about his time on the beloved comedy.
During FAN EXPO San Francisco 2025, Wilson appeared with Angela Kinsey, who played Angela Martin on “The Office,” according to Parade.
While at the event, the actor admitted that there’s one thing he regrets about his time on the show, which is shared by other alum of “The Office,” Ed Helms, who fans will recognize as Andy Bernard, and B.J. Novak, who appeared as Ryan Howard while also being a writer for the show.
Rainn Admitted to an Understandable Regret
Getty“It’s something that I’ve shared with a number of Office members. Ed Helms was one I spoke to about this and B.J. Novak I spoke to about it, that one of our regrets is that we didn’t enjoy it more,” Wilson revealed during FAN EXPO.
Although he noted that the cast of the show “enjoyed it a tone,” he explained that they were also distracted by other opportunities that popped up because of the success of “The Office.”
“You work so hard as an actor and you’re broke forever and you’re getting little roles and then all of a sudden like when your break hits, you want to make the most of it,” he said. “So, you know, all of a sudden I had opportunities to, you know, star in movies and develop other TV shows and get production deals and do commercial campaigns. And sometimes you could be so focused on these other aspects of your career that like the greatest job that you’ll ever have is in your lap, and you kind of neglect just really savoring how special and rich that experience is.”
Rainn Thinks Others Can Relate
GettyWhile not all of us will know what it’s like to star on a hit show, Wilson feels like others can relate to his regret. Indeed, people sometimes forget to enjoy what they’re experiencing in the moment.
“I think maybe this is something that we can all experience. You know, sometimes high school is your best time of your life,” Wilson told those who were in attendance at FAN EXPO. “Sometimes it’s college. Sometimes it’s a work experience or a vacation, but you’re thinking about what’s the next thing. So, it’s kind of a trap of how happiness works.”
