Garcelle Beauvais is getting candid about one of the most personal chapters of her life, opening up about why she made the difficult decision to end her marriage to ex-husband Mike Nilon.
During a recent appearance at the People Inc. Black Affinity Group’s Legacy Chat series, the former “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star reflected on her divorce and why, ultimately, it came down to protecting her peace. According to People, Beauvais described the split as a “hard decision,” especially at that stage in life.

“It’s a hard decision to get a divorce when you’re in your 40s,” she said. “Nobody signs up for that… but I had to do it because I had to pick me.”
Why Garcelle Beauvais Walked Away From Her Marriage
Beauvais, 59, explained that staying in the relationship would have changed who she was at her core. She shared that she began to feel like she would become anxious and insecure, something she didn’t want for herself or her family.
“I would be the anxious wife, ‘Where are you? Why are you late? Who’s on the phone?’” she said. “And I didn’t want to change that.”
She also noted that she didn’t want to model that kind of behavior for her children.
Beauvais married Nilon in 2001, and the couple welcomed twin sons, Jax and Jaid, in 2007. Their marriage ended in 2011 after she discovered he had been unfaithful. She previously shared on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” that finding a message on his phone exposed a long-term affair.
Looking back, Beauvais said the experience reshaped how she approaches relationships overall, including friendships. While she once believed in holding onto connections no matter what, she now sees things differently.
“Some people are just supposed to be for that season,” she said, explaining that she can appreciate the past without feeling the need to maintain every relationship.
From RHOBH Exit to Memoir: ‘Protecting My Peace’
That same mindset played a role in her more recent decision to leave “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” after five seasons.
According to People, Beauvais said she reached a turning point during the reunion taping, when she realized she no longer felt connected to the cast.
“When I sat on that reunion stage and looked around, I felt like I didn’t have any friends,” she said. “And if the show is based on friendships, I didn’t have any friends on that show anymore.”
She added that her “spirit was no longer there” and she couldn’t continue in that environment, even though the show brought her visibility and a wider audience.
“Once again, I had to choose me,” she said, drawing a clear parallel between leaving the show and ending her marriage.

Now, Beauvais is taking that message even further with her upcoming memoir, “Protecting My Peace… at All Costs,” which will be released as an Audible original. Per Variety, the book dives deeper into her personal journey, including the moments that pushed her to prioritize herself and set boundaries.
“This is a story about knowing when your spirit says no more, and having the courage to honor that truth,” Beauvais said in a statement.
Throughout it all, Beauvais has continued to encourage others to prioritize their well-being and step away from situations that no longer serve them.
“This is our one time. There’s no do-overs,” she said, per People. “Protect it. Keep the joys that you want to keep. Take out the negativity that you don’t want in your life.”
