After more than a decade on air, “Basketball Wives” is officially coming to an end.
Shaunie Henderson, the creator, executive producer and original cast member of the long-running VH1 reality series, announced on Instagram on Jan. 29 that the show will not be returning after 12 seasons. Henderson shared the news in a video message, calling the decision a natural step forward rooted in growth and evolution.
“I’m announcing today that Basketball Wives will not be returning,” Henderson said in the video. “This is just called growth and, you know, moving forward.”
Launched in 2010, the franchise followed the lives, friendships and conflicts of women connected to professional basketball players, eventually expanding into a cultural mainstay that shaped reality television for more than a decade.
A Franchise That Became a Cultural Moment
Henderson reflected on the show’s origins and lasting impact, noting that what began as a personal vision ultimately became much bigger than she ever imagined.
“Since its launch in 2010, this franchise has been the defining part of my professional journey,” she said. “What began as a vision to tell my story and stories of women like me, grew into a cultural movement that created opportunity, sparked conversation, and honestly amplified voices that deserved to be heard.”
Over the years, “Basketball Wives” introduced viewers to a rotating cast that included standout personalities such as Jackie Christie, Jennifer Williams, Evelyn Lozada, Malaysia Pargo, Brandi Maxiell and many others. The series chronicled friendships, feuds, family dynamics and business ventures, while also sparking some of reality TV’s most talked-about moments.
Henderson thanked the networks and production partners who helped bring the series to life, including VH1, BET, Truly Original and Shed Media, according to her Instagram video. She also emphasized her gratitude toward the women who trusted her with their stories season after season.
“Most importantly, I’m thankful to the women who trusted me with their stories and the creatives in front of and behind the camera who helped bring this vision to life,” she said.
Fans and former cast members quickly flooded the comments with reactions, celebrating the legacy of the show and Henderson’s leadership. Alum Kristen Scott wrote, “We had a time! 🥂 to the future!” while another commenter added, “End of a chapter, not the end of an impact.”
Closing One Chapter, Stepping Into Another

The announcement follows a turbulent final season that ended without a traditional reunion, leaving some viewers frustrated by unresolved storylines, according to Rolling Out. Despite that, Henderson framed the conclusion of the series as intentional rather than abrupt.
“Growth requires evolution and knowing when to honor a chapter while preparing for what’s next,” she said.
Henderson also shared that she is actively developing new projects that align more closely with where she is personally and professionally. In recent years, she has spoken openly about her evolution beyond reality television, including stepping into leadership within her faith community, per Essence.
While “Basketball Wives” is ending, Henderson made it clear the franchise remains central to her legacy.
“Basketball Wives will always be a cherished part of my legacy and a foundation of my career as a producer,” she said. “Thank you for your support from day one, and I look forward to this next season of leadership, creativity and expansion.”
