Josh Duggar Suffers Legal Setback as Judge Denies New Motion

Josh Duggar has suffered a new legal setback as he continues to fight his jail sentence.

The former reality star faced a new barrier in his attempts to get his conviction vacated when a judge deemed him as “not credible” in a court records obtained by PEOPLE Magazine. He was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison in May 2022 following a conviction on child pornography charges.

Josh Duggar’s Appeal Denied By Federal Judge

According to PEOPLE Magazine, Josh Duggar’s appeal was denied by a federal judge. He was seeking to vacate his conviction.

U.S. District Judge Timothy L. Brooks denied Duggar’s appeal, citing late paperwork. The United States Attorney’s Office received his appeal in July 2025, more than a month after its due date.

Per court records obtained by the entertainment outlet, the former TLC star asked for consideration due to the “prison mailbox rule.” Consequently, the rule was established by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1988 to prevent inmates from missing strict legal deadlines due to prison administrative delays, reported The University of Chicago Law Review.

In the court records, Judge Brooks stated, “The Court can grant Mr. Duggar one coincidence. Perhaps even two or three odd happenstances. But Mr. Duggar is asking the Court to believe something akin to a magic bullet theory—a sequential chain of events that defies common sense. Collectively, this chain of events—where Murphy’s law was lurking at every turn—is simply not credible.”

Josh Duggar remains incarcerated. He is married to Anna Duggar, and they have seven children.

Josh Duggar is The Oldest of the Duggar Kids From TLC’s ’19 Kids and Counting’

The Duggar family rose to international fame as the stars of TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting.”

The clan, headed by Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, is a supersized family that TLC turned into reality TV stars. Notably, their unconventional lifestyle and large size helped make them one of the network’s most recognizable reality TV franchises.

Over the years, millions of viewers watched the clan’s milestones, celebrations, and day-to-day routines. The franchise spawned multiple series and specials and turned the family into public figures.

The Arkansas natives lived in a household they described as strictly controlled. As a result, much of their entertainment and daily routine was said to be centered around family activities, their faith, and homeschooling.

Parents Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar named their first son Josh, followed by twins Jana and John-David. They continued the trend toward “J” names with Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy, Jedidiah, Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johanna, Jennifer, Jordyn, and Josie.

The family’s show was cancelled in 2015 after Josh Duggar admitted that as a teenager, he inappropriately touched several underage girls, including some of his sisters. That same year, Duggar’s name appeared in records connected to a website for people seeking extramarital affairs.

The series was rebranded as “Counting On,” which focused on Duggar daughters Jill, Jessa, Jana, Jinger and Joy-Anna. It lasted 11 seasons, from 2015 through 2020.
