Discovery’s “Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse” returns tonight at 8 p.m. ET with Season 1, Episode 5, and the stakes are higher than ever.
The survival series has already pushed its all-star cast to the limit in South Africa’s abandoned wastelands, and this episode promises even more predators, dangers, and eliminations.

“Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse” Season 1 Episode 5: What to Expect
According to Discovery’s synopsis, Wes Harper and Stee will scavenge materials to defend themselves from a crocodile that has lingered near their camp. At the same time, in one of the season’s most intense moments so far, Waz Addy and Teal Bulthuis are stalked by a lion, forcing them to confront a life-threatening situation.
The episode also promises a major milestone: one contestant is expected to secure the season’s first big-game kill, finally bringing much-needed protein to camp. Based on previews, many fans speculate that the lion encounter involving Waz and Teal may be tied to this kill.
But not all victories come without risk. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Joe Prouse will be targeted by a rogue elephant, pushing him to improvise an alarm system out of wire and shell casings in an attempt to protect his shelter.
Meanwhile, Frank Eytcheson calmly demonstrates how to catch a scorpion. “This is not happy. Now this won’t kill you but, you’re not going to enjoy the sting from it. I’ve been stung by several scorpions in the United States, and it can hurt from anywhere from 30 minutes to three days,” he explains in a preview clip.
The dangers don’t end there. Two contestants will come face-to-face with deadly black mambas, while the punishing heat continues to wear down the cast.

The Season 1 cast of “Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse” has brought together veteran survivalists and new challengers.
Franchise legends Steven Lee Hall Jr., Amber Hargrove, and Waz Addy were initially joined by Teal Bulthuis, Wes Harper, Russell Sage, Miranda Adams, Alexa Towersey, Joe Prouse, Kelly Roske, Steven Kelly, and Frank Eytcheson.
So far, Kelly Roske, Miranda Adams, Amber Hargrove, and Russell Sage have tapped. That leaves Wes Harper, Teal Bulthuis, Frank Eytcheson, Joe Prouse, Steven Lee Hall Jr., Alexa Towersey, and Waz Addy still in the fight.
Episode 5 is expected to raise the stakes even higher, with previews hinting that two more survivalists could be forced to bow out before the hour ends.
Unlike previous seasons, contestants will not be extracted at the end of the challenge. Instead, for the first time in franchise history, they must find their own way back to civilization — a twist that raises the stakes for every survivalist left in the field, per People.

“Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse” is the seventh spinoff in the long-running franchise, joining titles like “Naked and Afraid XL,” “Naked and Afraid: Alone,” and “Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing.” The series has stood out for its ghost-town setting, extreme weather, and the constant threat of predators.
