Big Changes on ‘Young & the Restless’ After Shocking Shakeup

Major changes are happening behind the scenes on “The Young and the Restless.”

Josh Griffith, the soap’s executive producer since 2023, is stepping down from his role, according to Soap Central.

The outlet confirmed that Griffith made the major decision so he could focus solely on his head writing duties for the long-running CBS soap.

Meanwhile, Sally McDonald, who has served as co-executive producer of The Young and the Restless since 2025, will now take over as the show’s sole executive producer.

Both Griffith and McDonald have long histories on “The Young and the Restless.”

Griffith first wrote for “The Young and the Restless” from 2006 to 2008 before returning as head writer from 2012 to 2013. He later came back as supervising producer and resumed head writing duties in 2019, eventually becoming executive producer in 2023.

Prior to his career on the CBS soap, Griffith was a writer for NBC’s “Santa Barbara” (1988) and co-created “Sunset Beach” (1997).

Griffith also wrote for “One Life to Live,” “As the World Turns,” “General Hospital,” and “Days of Our Lives.”

Over the course of his career, Griffith has earned seven Daytime Emmy Awards and four Writers Guild of America Awards.

Meanwhile, McDonald began working as a director at “The Young and the Restless” in 1996, eventually becoming a producer in 2008.

She then worked as a supervising producer from 2011 to 2012, and returned to the soap as co-executive producer in 2025. McDonald earned eight Daytime Emmy Awards and a Directors Guild of America Award.

The late William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell co-created “The Young and the Restless” in 1973. For the first few years, the show focused on the Brooks and Foster families, as well as Katherine Chancellor.

In 1980, the show shifted to a 60-minute per episode format, putting more focus on the Newman, Abbott, and Williams families.

“The Young and the Restless” isn’t the only CBS soap that has undergone a major shakeup behind the scenes.

In 2025, “The Bold and the Beautiful” had a historic moment when Casey Kasprzyk was promoted as the show’s executive producer. It was the first time in almost three decades that the CBS daytime drama made changes in its executive ranks.

Kasprzyk is only the fourth executive producer in the show’s 38-year history. Creators William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell executive-produced together for almost eight years before their son, Bradley Bell, took over in 1996.

“Twenty-two years ago Casey Kasprzyk joined ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ at the front desk,” Bell said in a statement at the time. “Since then, Casey has flourished in every level of production.”

Kasprzyk began his career on “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 2003 and was promoted to Associate Producer in 2008. In 2014, he became the Supervising producer for the soap.

Kasprzyk has earned four Daytime Emmy Awards for his work on the CBS sudser.
