When “Wonka” first premiered, there were questions about whether the prequel story about Willy Wonka was even needed. Then the Timothée Chalamet movie was released, and it quickly hit big in the theaters. At least, in terms of financial success.
It didn’t take long for talks about a sequel to take shape, and “Wonka 2” was quickly picked up. There was some hope that it would be produced in time for a December 2027 release, but since then, there have been crickets. Now, the news isn’t great.
‘Wonka 2’ Is No Longer in Active Development
GettyIt didn’t take long for director Paul King to confirm that “Wonka 2” was in active development. He was working on the script, and there was a lot of hype and hope surrounding the movie. Now, co-writer Simon Farnaby told Variety the opposite. The movie is no longer in the works, being “delayed indefinitely.”
What’s the deal? This is a case where it’s not on the studio or the production team. Instead, it’s because of Chamalet’s schedule. After the success of “Wonka,” Chamalet saw more success with the “Dune” sequels, “A Complete Unknown,” and “Marty Supreme.” He’s one of the most sought-after actors of his generation, and that has led to a lot of opportunities and possibilities.
Farnaby did make it clear that Chamalet would like to do a sequel to the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” prequel story, but he doesn’t quite know how to fit everything in. Nor does he know what he wants to work on next.
What Would ‘Wonka 2’ Be About?
GettyThe first movie gave us a look at how the eccentric Willy Wonka found out about the Oompa Loompas and worked with them to build his chocolate factory. It’s a tale that is often quickly glanced over in both the books and the movies that have been based on Roald Dahl’s classics.
Chamalet’s character is rather optimistic and goal-driven throughout the story, but at some point, he needs to turn into the complex recluse that fans know him as in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” and the second movie could have helped to showcase that. Of course, there is also the need to see how the chocolate factory grows to become one of the most lucrative and popular chocolate factories in the area.
King also shared that he wanted to take some time to explore more of Wonka outside of the city. He considered having the titular character head to other parts of the world to source rare materials to create his wonderful inventions. However, the director didn’t go into other details, likely due to it being such early days in the development.
This current news doesn’t mean that “Wonka 2” is completely canceled. There have been movies that haven’t had sequels for decades. Just look at the success of the “Top Gun” sequel decades later! However, if Chamalet is to take on the role again, fans can’t wait decades to see it happen, and it sounds like it’s up to the actor as to whether the ball gets rolling on it again.
