Child Soap Star’s Principal Announced His Acting Success Over the Loudspeaker at School

A young actor managed to keep his early career largely hidden from his classmates in New York—until his middle school principal unexpectedly revealed his accomplishments to the entire school over the loudspeaker system.

Jesse McCartney, now 38, was cast as JR Chandler on “All My Children” at just 11 years old while simultaneously performing as a member of the boy band Dream Street. Despite his professional success, McCartney maintained a “normal childhood” growing up in Ardsley, New York. This continued up until his junior year of high school, he tells People.

The Loudspeaker Announcement

Most of McCartney’s classmates had no knowledge that he was appearing on a daytime soap opera. They certainly didn’t know that the Television Academy had nominated him for two Daytime Emmy Awards. That changed during an unexpected moment in science class.

“It’s a daytime soap opera, so we’re all in school. A lot of people didn’t even know that I was on a soap,” he explained, according to People. “Then, I was in science class, I’ll never forget it. My [middle school] principal announced on the loudspeaker, ‘Oh, one of our own students has been nominated for a daytime Emmy Award.'”

The announcement had immediate consequences for McCartney’s anonymity. “That outed me, that I was on a soap opera. Dream Street came along, and because the audience were mainly female tweens, some of the girls at school started to catch on,” he stated.

The situation intensified when producers cast McCartney in “Summerland” at age 16. “Things started to get weird at school. Then, people were treating me differently. I ended up leaving and coming to California. I was mainly tutored on set for my junior year and senior year. Then I would come back for graduation, and people were just a little different,” he shared.

Navigating Early Fame

McCartney acknowledged that period of his life presented significant challenges. “The sacrifices, that was definitely hard. I missed out on a lot of family things that I wish I didn’t miss out on,” he said. “My brother and sister’s moments, they were younger than me. My brother’s 10 years my junior, so I missed a lot of his childhood. But it was overall, I guess, a small price to pay for everything that I have now, and my relationship with my family is really strong.”

Despite the difficulties, McCartney eventually embraced his career path. He released his debut album “Beautiful Soul” in 2004 when he was 17 years old. The title track became a defining song of the early 2000s and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Reflecting on the song’s impact during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McCartney said: “It’s rare to have a song and pop that stands the test of time and crosses over into a new generation. And I think Beautiful Soul is such a, um, is one of those songs that really marks the early two thousands, and it was such an important record for me.”

He described the surreal experience of sudden fame. “I was literally in math class and then suddenly I’m in Japan and singing for an audience of people that don’t speak English, but they can sing the song. It was pretty amazing and also strange,” he recalled, according to People.

McCartney credits his support system with helping him avoid common pitfalls of child stardom. “I think you’re not a normal teenage boy if at some point you don’t just want to stick your finger to the world and say, ‘I’m not doing this.’ I definitely had some hard lessons in life with work. I was always the youngest person in the room. I just got lucky I had a lot of good people that weren’t afraid to tell me no. [I learned that] actions have consequences. I skirted some of the cliché pitfalls, and I’m very grateful for that,” he explained.

McCartney has since released multiple albums, including his most recent EP “Weightless.” The actor has also appeared in various projects, such as “Greek” and “Young and Hungry.” He is currently on tour through December, with select dates alongside the Jonas Brothers.
