Jeff Probst Reveals Why He Nearly Walked Away From ‘Survivor’ Before 50th Season

Over the last 26 years, the ongoing legacy of “Survivor” has become inextricably linked with the legacy of its longtime host Jeff Probst, who has personally sat at the helm of the Emmy-winning reality competition series since its inception in 2000.

Now, as CBS prepares to launch the show’s milestone 50th season on Wednesday, February 25, Probst is opening up about how he’s grown to become synonymous with the “Survivor” brand.

From his beginnings as an untapped 38-year-old host, Probst, now 64, has climbed the ranks over the seasons, adding titles like executive producer and showrunner to his resume, all while building an encyclopedic knowledge of the “greatest adventure on television.”

That being said, the host’s journey with the series wasn’t without its uncertainties, as Probst revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, that he actually considered leaving the series multiple times over the last 26 years.

“It would have been the worst decision of my life,” Probst told EW. “Who knows how serious I really was about leaving. I think there were a period of years on ‘Survivor’ where the travel was pretty extensive, and the time away was a long time away, and the stress to keep the show high in the ratings – all that pressure does have a cumulative effect on you.”

Probst’s recent comments followed after a number of previously reported instances where the host hinted at the possibility of stepping away from the series, including a 2015 interview with the New York Times wherein he reminisced on a moment of doubt that crossed his mind while filming “Survivor: Gabon” in 2008.

“My Achilles’ heel for a lot of my life was that nobody saw me as a storyteller, that they saw me as a white guy with dark hair who was just a game show host,” Prost stated in the article. “And that in terms of my own self-image was the thing that could gut me. It was like a kidney punch.”

Despite his concerns, Probst won the inaugural Emmy Award for Best Reality Show Host later the same year, followed by a second consecutive victory in 2009, proving that, even if he was “just a game show host,” he was the best in the game.

Regardless, Probst continued to make efforts to expand his resume beyond “Survivor” in the years that followed, including launching his own daytime chat show – “The Jeff Probst Show” – on CBS in 2012, drawing speculation about his commitment to his original post with the network.

The program, however, was cancelled after just a single season on the air, allowing Probst to return to “Survivor” full-time.

Probst Nearly Called It Quits Due to ‘Survivor’s Intense Filming Schedule

Probst similarly admitted that “there were definitely periods where I was feeling just exhausted,” with the competition series’ intense filming schedule that, prior to 2016’s permanent relocation to Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands, required the host to spend months travelling to and filming in exotic locales like Cambodia, The Philippines, Nicaragua, Samoa and more.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the series to pause its previously uninterrupted filming schedule, allowing Probst and the show’s crew to take a much-needed break wherein they were able to rediscover their passion for “Survivor.”

“The rebirth during COVID is one of the best things that’s ever happened to the show and has ever happened to me,” he revealed.

Probst would later liken the rejuvenating break to a parent’s need for a moment of respite in the face of the ongoing chaos of family life.

Probst Says Leaving ‘Survivor’ Would’ve Been the ‘Worst Decision’ of His Life

After being able to take a step back from the show, however briefly, followed by changes that moved filming to Fiji permanently, Probst admitted that leaving “Survivor” would’ve been the “single worst decision” he “could have ever made.”

“It’s impossible to describe what ‘Survivor’ represents to me. Impossible,” he said in a 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It goes beyond creative expression or professional recognition. It’s much deeper. It’s right in line with the ideas I try to impress on our players. It’s about pushing myself further than I think I can go, about trying to stay in the moment and adapt to my surroundings, about being a good ‘tribe member,’ about being open to new ideas and new people. The same opportunities ‘Survivor’ offers the players, it offers me.”

“I love ‘Survivor’ and I still need ‘Survivor,’” added Probst, who has since confirmed that he has no intentions of stepping away from the series anytime soon.

Be sure to catch Jeff Probst make reality TV hosting history on the hotly-anticipated three-hour premiere episode of “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” on Wednesday, February 25 at 8:00pm ET on CBS.
