‘Survivor 50’ Stars Open Up About Their Personal Relationships with Host Jeff Probst

For most reality competition series – from “Dancing with the Stars” to “The Bachelor” – hosts have come and gone with the times. When it comes to “Survivor,” however, the longrunning series has become intrinsically linked with its illustrious host, Jeff Probst, since he first uttered the words “Survivors, ready?” on the program’s inaugural season all the way back in the summer of 2000.

Now, 26 years later, Probst continues to usher the Emmy-winning series into the future as he prepares to once more step back into his hosting role for the milestone 50th season of “Survivor” – set to make its grand three-hour CBS debut on Wednesday, February 25.

The 64-year-old host, who was additionally elevated to the role of executive producer in 2010, has been instrumental in altering the lives of countless individuals during his time on the show, including more than 750 contestants, 275 international crew members, 370 local workers who assist production on-location in Fiji, and millions of dedicated viewers around the world.

In a new article from Vanity Fair published in anticipation of next month’s “Survivor 50” premiere, the cast and crew looked back on Probst’s undeniable legacy, sharing intimate details about what the host is like when the cameras aren’t rolling, as well as opening up about how they try to repay him for everything he’s done to make “Survivor” into a global reality TV phenomenon.

Who is ‘Survivor’ Host Jeff Probst When the Cameras Stop Rolling?

“I get lost on this island that I’ve been on for a decade,” Probst told Vanity Fair’s David Canfield last summer as preparations for filming “Survivor 50” commenced. Together, the host and reporter took a joyride around Fiji’s 432-acre Mana Island, where the series has filmed each and every one of its seasons since settling in the area permanently in 2016.

Despite having turned the island into the official “Survivor” headquarters – complete with dining halls, crew residences, and, of course, dedicated sets for the show’s iconic challenges and Tribal Council area – Probst is candid about his so-called “topographical disorientation.”

“I don’t ever know if I’m north, south, east, or west,” he said, adding, “Everybody laughs that I still don’t know how to get from my house to tribal [council] – and tribal’s only 100 yards away.”

This behind-the-scenes glimpse at Probst when the cameras aren’t rolling is a far cry from the ever-confident host who has overseen the dramatic eliminations of hundreds of hopeful castaways.

Mike White Says Probst’s Defining Quality is His ‘Consistency of Self’

According to “Survivor 50’ contestant Mike White, however, the real-life Jeff Probst extends even further beyond the version of himself that he’s carefully crafted for TV over the last 26 years.

“You meet him at first, and here’s this guy with all this energy and positivity, and it’s like…you can’t sustain that. When does the mask come off? Who’s the real Jeff Probst?” said White, who’s been friends with Probst for years – even before he joined the cast of “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” in 2018.

“Yet his most defining quality is his consistency of self. Years later, I still feel like that’s the guy I know,” added the creator of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” who claimed that Probst has been his biggest cheerleader since the hit drama series debuted in 2020. “When he watches the show, Jeff sends me texts. He’s just very complimentary and he’s so into it. You do need some people in your life who are just hype men.”

Cirie Fields Says ‘Survivor’ Alumni Want to Make Probst ‘Proud’

While White praised Probst for hyping him up, other “Survivor 50” contestants expressed their desire to prove that the host didn’t make a mistake by inviting them to return for the milestone season, including soon-to-be five-time player Cirie Fields, who told Vanity Fair, “We don’t want to disappoint him. We want to make him proud of us because he chose us. We always want to be chosen by Jeff.”

Probst originally “chose” Cirie all the way back in 2006 as she joined the cast of “Survivor: Panama.”

At the time, Fields was working as a registered nurse, raising three kids, and spending her evenings on the couch doing the same thing many Americans were doing – watching “Survivor.”

Now, 20 years later, Cirie has proved herself as one of the greatest strategic players reality TV has ever seen, scoring a 4th place finish on “Panama” before celebrating show-stopping follow-up performances on “Survivor: Micronesia” (3rd place), “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains” (17th place) and “Survivor: Game Changers” (6th place).

Widely regarded as “the best to never win the game,” Cirie’s “Survivor” fame has helped her open countless doors in the reality TV space, including winning runs on both USA’s “Snake in the Grass” and Peacock’s “The Traitors,” as well as appearances on “Big Brother” and “Australian Survivor.”

“Survivor 50” will mark her fifth appearance on the CBS series and, after knowing Probst for 20 years, she’s happy to call the host her family.

“I don’t care what nobody says,” she told VF. “I know that Jeff loves me. I can feel that Jeff loves me.”

Cirie Recalls Tender Moment with Probst on ‘Game Changers’

Fields defended the feeling, recalling a moment from “Game Changers” when she was pushed to her breaking point during a particularly difficult challenge that required her – then in her mid-40s – to balance, swim, and climb out of the ocean onto precarious platforms.

Cirie, in tears, signaled to her tribemates that she couldn’t go on, that she was tapping out, until Probst called to her from his own platform.

“Cirie, you are the woman who, over a decade ago, got up off the couch to come try this game ‘Survivor.’ These are the moments you were looking for. This challenge is over, but we will stay here with you if you want to try to conquer this,” Probst said as Fields burst into sobs. “You’re gonna get this, Cirie.”

Motivated by Jeff’s words, Cirie steeled herself, pushed through the pain, and completed the task set before her, to the cheers and adoration of her gathered competitor.

“This is what happens when you believe in yourself,” Probst said, congratulating Fields as she pulled herself over the final hurdle and declared, “I did it.”

Ten years later, the memory still brings tears to her eyes, as she told VF, “It would have been nothing for me to get on that boat and just give up. But Jeff is saying to me, ‘I’m right here with you, and I will stay here with you through this, however you want to do it.’ How could I not want to make him proud of me, to show him I’m never gonna quit? You just told me you’re never gonna quit on me – how could I quit on you?”

Dee Valladares Calls Probst a ‘Father Figure’ to ‘Survivor’ Players

Praise for Probst also extended into “Survivor”s new era, with Season 45 champion Dee Valladares explaining to Vanity Fair that many of the show’s contestants look up to the host as a kind of “father figure.”

“When you’re playing that game, you’re also witnessing how much Jeff loves ‘Survivor,’” said the Miami-based entrepreneur, who will be one of three former winners joining the cast of Season 50. “It makes me feel like, Damn, I want to find something that I truly care about the way that Jeff cares about ‘Survivor.’”

Fans can catch Jeff Probst, Mike White, Cirie Fields, Dee Valladares and the rest of the “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” cast when the milestone season makes its highly-anticipated three-hour CBS debut on Wednesday, February 25 at 8:00pm ET.
