Inside Giorgio Armani’s Special Bond With Princess Diana

Giorgio Armani’s passing at 91 marks the end of a defining era in fashion and has stirred memories of one of his most touching connections to Princess Diana. Renowned for his clean, timeless designs, Armani dressed Hollywood icons and royals alike.

Among his quiet legacies was a bond with Diana, one that was immortalized on the very last day of her life. On August 31, 1997, Diana was photographed in Paris wearing an Armani blazer.

This perfectly reflected the polished and understated style she had adopted in the years following her divorce from Prince Charles.

That outfit would become one of her final public images before her tragic death.

In the weeks before Diana’s passing, Armani had been working on a special dress for her to wear at an engagement that fall. It was a design she would never get the chance to wear.

Reflecting on her evolving style, Armani told WWD at the time: “She seemed to have found that style of her own, strictly controlling any temptation to overdo things, and favoring clean, modern lines that set off her great face and figure in a very up-to-date way.”

He added, “That’s what I was trying to emphasize with the dress I just did for her. It’s worth noting that she chose the design herself, the simplest one in the group of sketches I sent her.”

While Diana was long associated with British designers like Catherine Walker, she embraced Italian and French houses such as Armani, Versace, and Dior in the ’90s.

The sleek tailoring and pared-down silhouettes of Armani’s collections reflected her new chapter as an independent woman and global humanitarian.

Valentino, another designer Diana turned to at the time, told WWD: “She had escaped the rules of the princess and the clothes a princess was supposed to wear and wanted clothes that were right for the new woman she had become.”

A Legacy Carried Forward by Royals

Armani’s relationship with Diana marked just one part of his lasting influence within royal circles. Princess Kate wore a red Armani Collezioni skirt suit for a 2017 engagement with Prince William and Prince Harry, while Meghan Markle chose a black Armani dress for her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

As the Armani Group confirmed the designer’s death on September 4, tributes have poured in from around the world, celebrating a visionary who redefined modern elegance. For many, his quiet bond with Diana remains one of the most moving reminders of his artistry and the timeless women who wore his creations.
