Prince William Shares the Tourist Comment That’s Become a Windsor Castle Legend

Prince William revealed one of the funniest visitor comments he’s ever heard during a candid appearance on Eugene Levy’s Apple TV+ series “The Reluctant Traveler,” and the story has been making his family laugh for years.

Prince William Shared a Hilarious Windsor Castle Tourist Question

In the episode, Prince William gives Levy a tour of Windsor Castle — the longest-occupied palace in Europe — while sharing personal memories from his life growing up there. For him, the castle wasn’t just a landmark; it was his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s home.

“The tour guides get to hear some funny stories,” William says. “We heard back one time, that — I won’t name the nationality of the tourist, but — they’re looking around the castle going, ‘Wow this place is incredible, but why did they have to build the castle so close to Heathrow airport?’”

The prince laughed as he explained that the comment has “gone down as the sort of number one quote of a tourist going around Windsor Castle.” He added with a grin, “I know my history is bad, but that’s another level.”

For context, Windsor Castle was originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, while Heathrow Airport opened in 1930 as a small airfield, becoming London’s largest international hub.

The Prince of Wales Also Shared His Childhood Games Inside Windsor Castle

William also shared a more personal memory from his childhood, recalling the games he and his cousins played in St. George’s Hall.

“My cousins and I, and the family, would chase each other up and down here and do silly games,” he said. “I remember these carpets weren’t here, and there were a couple of spots where you used to have to watch out because you’d get massive splinters… It was a really dark, wooden, oak floor. So, when you went running off, you’d end up coming away and you’d have an enormous splinter.”

He revealed that he’s now passed this tradition on to his own children — Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. “We come in after hours and chase each other around sometimes,” he shared. “It’s a lot easier now,” he added with a smile. “My children don’t realise how lucky they are.”

Prince William Admitted ‘Change’ Is On His ‘Agenda’

The conversation also turned serious when Levy asked about William’s hopes for his eldest son’s future role as king. “It’s an interesting question, and it’s a big question, that one,” William replied.

“Obviously, I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do, a world and a job that actually does impact people’s lives for the better. That is caveated with, I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past, that Harry and I had to grow up with — and I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.”

“I think it’s safe to say that change is on my agenda. Change for good,” he continued. “And I embrace that and I enjoy that change — I don’t fear it.”

William also reflected on his upbringing, crediting Princess Diana for setting the tone at home. “I think it’s really important that that atmosphere is created at home. You have to have that warmth, that feeling of safety, security, love,” he said. “That all has to be there, and that was certainly part of my childhood.”
