As the coaches on season 28 of “The Voice” narrow their teams down from 12 to six artists, they’re having to make some very tough decisions. On the second night of Battles — on October 14, 2025 — fans watched six more duos, who picked their own partners for the first time in the show’s history, duke it out onstage.
Snoop Dogg, Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, and Niall Horan still chose the songs for their paired-up artists, and started the Battles with one Save and one Steal each. After a first night of intense Battles, it was hard to imagine anyone could up the ante — but the very first Battle blew the coaches and fans away.
Team Reba Battle Shocker: Letter to Elise vs. Ryan Mitchell
In the first Battle of the night, fan favorite duo Letter to Elise chose to team up with rocker Ryan Mitchell, and McEntire assigned them Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me).”
Among many fans, it was a foregone conclusion that Letter to Elise — made up of two longtime bandmates in their 30s — would take the cake with their smooth harmonies. Especially since 20-year-old Mitchell got into the Battles in such an unconventional way. The alt-rock singer didn’t get any chair turns during his initial Blind Audition — but host Carson Daly stepped in to save the day.
Unbeknownst to the coaches, Daly gave Mitchell his one-time “Carson Callback” card — a first-time-ever twist that allowed Daly to save one artist who didn’t get a chair turn. Mitchell got to come back 24 hours later with a different song, and he chose a rocking version of Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time.” It was so good, McEntire turned her chair and added him to her team.
Mitchell may have entered the Battles as the underdog, but he shocked the coaches by overpowering the duo on his own, and then joining in to do three-part harmony with Letter to Elise. McEntire called the trio’s performance “crazy good stuff” and said she hated to have to choose, but went with Mitchell — telling him, “You have got so many people believing in you!” He replied, “I’m not taking it for granted.”
