Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are taking their partnership from music to television in a brand-new way. The couple, who tied the knot in 2021, just announced their first joint TV project as husband and wife.
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Team Up for ‘Wizard of Oz’ TV Series
According to Deadline, the music power duo will serve as executive producers on “Dorothy,” a contemporary, music-infused retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” for Prime Video.
The project comes from Gina Matthews under her Little Engine banner, with Shelton producing through his Lucky Horseshoe company alongside Lee Metzger. The series will reimagine L. Frank Baum’s classic books with a YA twist, using the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the modern challenges young adults face today.
“We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina shared the idea with me and Lee,” Shelton said. “I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project.”
Stefani echoed his enthusiasm, adding, “It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me.”
Why ‘Dorothy’ Marks a New Chapter For ‘The Voice’ Couple
This isn’t the first time fans have seen Stefani and Shelton collaborate. The couple famously met while coaching on NBC’s “The Voice” and later released a string of hit duets, including “Nobody But You” and “Hangin’ On.” But “Dorothy” marks their first scripted television project together.
The show comes at a milestone moment in the couple’s relationship. Shelton recently told People that after 10 years together, life with Stefani still “feels just as exciting and new and happy.” The country star also revealed that he and Stefani recorded two new duets for his latest album, “For Recreational Use Only.” One track, “Hangin’ On,” made the cut, while the other is being saved for a future release.
“We live together, so we walk around the house singing these songs all the time,” Shelton said of their creative process. “By the time we get to the studio, we’re normally really prepared.”
While “Dorothy” is still in early development, Stefani and Shelton’s involvement promises to bring a fresh musical energy to the timeless tale.
As Stefani put it: “Being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me.”
Additional details on casting and production are expected to be announced in the coming months.
