‘Goonies’ Star Confirms Sequel In the Works, Original Cast Onboard: ‘All of Us Want to Do This’

It’s been a long time coming, but could the long-awaited sequel to “Goonies” finally be on the way?

According to one of the film’s stars, the original cast is primed and ready to reprise their roles, while a script is being written, plans are being set in motion and the project is slowly moving forward.

Update From Data

It was back in February 2025 that Variety first reported that Warner Bros. was officially greenlighting the four decades-later sequel to the beloved movie about a group of kids who embark on a wild adventure after discovering a treasure map.

At the time, the announcement indicated that Steven Spielberg was onboard as producer, as was Richard Donner, who directed the film.

Ke Huy Quan, who played pint-sized inventor Data in the 1985 cult classic, shared an update on the project when interviewed by USA Today.

“We’ve been trying to get the sequel going for the last 40 years,” Quan told the outlet.

“I still have my hopes up,” he shared, adding, “All of us want to do this.”

A Pop Culture Touchstone

Quan, who made a career comeback in Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All At One” after acting opportunities dwindled, recognizes the cultural impact that “Goonies” continues to wield.

“Goonies has meant so much to so many people,” Quan told USA Today.

“It has made a huge impact in people’s lives and I got lucky to meet a lot of fans up close,” he added. “They always tell me that that is the one experience that they really treasure because it’s not just about them, it’s not just about the movie, but it’s about those beautiful moments that they shared with their parents. And that’s what I really love hearing.”

Forty-Plus Years Later

While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, the only thing that’s known for sure about the sequel is that its stars — who were kids in the 1980s — are now middle-aged adults.

When asked by USA Today to described what it would look like if “the Goonies traded their bikes for a car on a road trip,” and which character would ride shotgun and which would make the road-trip playlist, Quan offered an instant response.

“Because Josh Brolin is the more mature of all of us, I feel like he would want to be behind the wheel. I mean, certainly I don’t think he would feel comfortable or safe with us behind the wheel,” Quan explained with a laugh.

“The playlist, I think that would be a fight between Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman, who would be in charge,” he continued.

“Sean [Astin] would probably be in charge of where to go, where to stop, where to eat and all of that,” Quan shared. “And then it would just be Jeff [Cohen] and I in the back just chatting nonstop.”

As for who’d be riding shotgun, Quan referenced the puppy-love romance between Brolin’s character, Brand, and Andy, played by Kerri Green.

“Kerri would be right next to Josh,” Quan decclared.
