American actress, director and producer Melissa Joan Hart turns 50 today. The star was born on April 18, 1976, in Smithtown, New York.

Hart began acting in the mid-1980s when she was still a child. However, she rose to prominence in the early 1990s and went on to become a major teen star, nabbing the eponymous roles in shows like Nickelodeon’s “Clarissa Explains It All” and Showtime’s “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” She is now best known for her appearance in television films like 2007’s festive flick “Holiday in Handcuffs.”

She landed the lead role of Clarissa Darling in Nickelodeon’s teen sitcom “Clarissa Explains It All” — a role that lasted from 1991 until 1994. Additionally, she appeared in episodes of “Nick Arcade” and “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”

In the mid-late 1990s, Hart expanded her television repertoire, appearing episodes of shows like “Touched by an Angel,” “Weinerville,” “Clueless,” “Boy Meets World,” “Teen Angel,” “That ’70s Show,” and several episodes of “Moesha.”

She also appeared in several television films, including “Family Reunion: A Relative Nightmare,” “Twisted Desire,” “The Right Connections,” “Two Came Back,” and “Silencing Mary.”

Hart also appeared in her first theatrical movies, including 1998’s teen rom-com “Can’t Hardly Wait” and 1999’s teen rom-com “Drive Me Crazy.”

Most pertinently, however, she landed the lead role of Sabrina Spellman in fantasy sitcom “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” — a role she played from 1996 until 2003.

In addition to continuing her iconic role as Sabrina Spellman, Hart landed several more television roles in the early 2000s.

Her credits included episodes of shows like “Just Shoot Me!,” “The Jamie Kennedy Experiment,” and “North Shore.” She also appeared in the television film “Rent Control.”

Her list of movie credits also grew. They included the likes of 2000’s superhero movies “The Specials” and “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker,” and 2001’s parody flick “Not Another Teen Movie.”


The Mid-Late 2000s

In the mid-late 2000s, Hart’s television credits included “Justice League Unlimited,” “Robot Chicken,” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Notably, Hart also appeared in the 2009 television film “My Fake Fiancé,” and as a contestant in 2009’s ninth season of “Dancing with the Stars.” Partnered with professional dancer Mark Ballas, she was eliminated seventh, finishing in ninth place.

Movie-wise, Hart only appeared in the 2009 horror thriller “Nine Dead.”

In 2010, Hart landed another of her most famous roles and the eponymous Mel Burke in sitcom “Melissa & Joey.” She played the role until 2015. Her only other television roles included the MTV show “When I Was 17” and truTV’s short-lived reality series “Motor City Masters.”

The only movies she appeared in at this time were the 2011 dark comedy-drama television film “Satin” and the 2014 festive romance television film “The Santa Con.”


The Mid-Late 2010s

Melissa Joan Hart significantly added to her list of television credits in the mid-late 2010s. Her many credits included episodes of “The Mysteries of Laura,” “Celebrity Family Feud,” “Pickle and Peanut,” “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters,” “The Loud House,” and “The Goldbergs.” Hart also landed a leading and recurring roles in the short-lived comedy-drama series “No Good Nick” and animated sitcom “The Casagrandes” (the latter of which lasted until 2022).

Television movies she appeared in included 2016’s festive offering “Broadcasting Christmas,” 2017’s Christmas movie “A Very Merry Toy Store” and horror flick “The Watcher in the Woods,” 2018’s yuletide title “A Very Nutty Christmas,” and 2019’s “Christmas Reservations.”

Her theatrical movie credits in this period were the 2016 Christian drama flick “God’s Not Dead 2” and the 2017 animated “CarGo.”


The Early 2020s

The early 2020s saw Hart appearing in several television films. They were 2020’s festive “Dear Christmas,” 2021’s Christmas flick “Mistletoe in Montana,” 2022’s drama “Dirty Little Secret,” 2023’s thriller “Would You Kill for Me? The Mary Bailey Story,” and 2024’s drama “The Bad Guardian.”

Other television credits included reality competition show “Hell’s Kitchen,” gameshow “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” and performing as Lamp on season 9 of “The Masked Singer.”

She had no theatrical movie credits at this time.
