Ryan Kiera Armstrong is speaking out after the highly anticipated revival of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was unexpectedly canceled.
The 16-year-old actress, who had been cast as the lead in the planned reboot titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” shared an emotional message with fans on Instagram after the project was scrapped by Hulu.
Armstrong Took to Her Instagram Stories
“I’m sure many of you have already heard the news by now,” Armstrong said in a video posted to her Instagram Story on March 14. “I wanted to come on here and say thank you for all of the support that you guys have given me and this show throughout the last couple months. It’s been really special.”
Holding back tears, the young star admitted she felt proud of the work done on the pilot episode — even though fans may never get the chance to see it.
“I’m really proud of the pilot that we made,” she said. “I’m sad that you won’t be able to see it.”
Still, Armstrong emphasized that the experience itself meant a lot to her.
“It doesn’t take away from the amazing experience that I had,” she added.
The actress also took time to thank the creative team behind the project, including original Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar as well as writers Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao.
“I also want to say thank you to all the fans who believed in this new chapter, and who believed in me,” Armstrong said. “Thank you to the cast I worked with. You guys are awesome.”
She ended her message on a hopeful note, reminding fans that the legacy of the franchise continues even if the reboot didn’t move forward.
“Buffy is such a big part of all of our lives,” she said. “It’s not going anywhere. Who knows what the future will hold?”
Gellar Broke the Sad News to Fans
Earlier the same day, Gellar confirmed the cancellation herself in a heartfelt video shared on Instagram.
“So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” the actress said while addressing fans directly.
Gellar rose to global fame portraying Buffy Summers in the original series, which ran from 1997 to 2003 and became a defining show of its era.
The supernatural drama followed a teenage girl chosen to battle vampires, demons and other dark forces while navigating everyday life.
Reflecting on revisiting the character during the development process, Gellar shared how meaningful it was to reconnect with the story.
“I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,” she said, adding that the experience reminded her how much the character still means to both her and longtime fans.
