Lauren Alaina Cries Through Brave & Heartbreaking Video About Her Late Father’s Struggles

In a bravely vulnerable social media post on October 7, 2025, country star and “American Idol” alum Lauren Alaina cried throughout a video in which she opened up about her late dad’s struggles with addiction. Alaina’s father, Jerry Eugene (J.J.) Suddeth, died in July 2024 at the age of 52.

Noting that it would have been his 13th year of sobriety “if he had made it,” Alaina noted that her dad didn’t live to see his 12th sober anniversary and then revealed through tears, “I’m not even sure about his 11th. He relapsed and it’s a major contributing factor to why he’s no longer here with us.”

Lauren Alaina Sorts Through Dad’s Belongings While Urging Those Struggling to Find Support

Alaina, who became a first-time mom on June 11, wrote in her post’s caption that her “heart aches” more on the day of her dad’s annual mark of sobriety than on his birthday or Father’s Day.

“I just wanted to say, if you’re struggling, there’s so many people who love you,” Alaina said in her raw and touching video. “And for you to love yourself, and to get the help that you need. Surround yourself with people who love you.”

Showing that she was sitting on a driveway, with bags of her dad’s clothes, Alaina began to cry harder as she said, “I’m gonna pick out some of my favorites and make a blanket for my daughter. And I’m gonna donate the rest to a veteran organization so that maybe there’s a man out there that needs it, that can wear my dad’s clothes, find hope. Find the hope that my dad couldn’t find.”

“Be kind to yourself, be kind to others,” Alaina concluded, wiping tears from her eyes. “Life is so short. Take care of yourselves. There are people that love you. Don’t ever forget that.”

The “All My Exes” singer wrote in her post that she shared her pain in order to honor her dad’s life, writing, “He was a proud father and pawpaw. He was a proud Army veteran. He was smart. He was kind. He was the funniest person I have ever met. He always had the answer to any question I had. He is so missed. Love yourself and others.”
