Major Update on Lionel Richie After Recent Hospitalization

Lionel Richie is back home after a recent hospital stay, giving fans a reassuring update following another health scare on tour.

The “Hello” singer, 77, has been released from a St. Louis hospital and is now back at his home in Los Angeles, where he is “doing great,” PEOPLE confirmed.

Richie Was in the ICU

Richie checked himself into the hospital after his Aug. 29 performance at The Muny in St. Louis, Missouri.

Fans quickly rushed to social media to share their get well wishes for his quick recovery.

The “American Idol” judge was admitted to the intensive care unit, where he underwent cardiac testing as a precaution. He was expected to fly back to Los Angeles on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The hospitalization followed a concerning moment during the final song of his concert. Richie asked his team to bring him a chair while performing “All Night Long,” allowing him to finish the show while seated.

Earlier in the concert, Richie reportedly addressed some of the health problems he had experienced while on the road. He told the crowd that he had recently seen a doctor after feeling unwell, according to The St. Louis American.

“Some things have been happening on this tour that kind of shook me up a little bit, because I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on,” Richie said. “I went back to the doctor, and he said, ‘You are suffering from dehydration.’”

Richie continued performing while drinking electrolytes during the St. Louis show.

“I’m telling you, this stuff is nasty — but it works,” Richie said while drinking.

He also joked about advice he had received, including a suggestion from an elderly fan to try castor oil. Richie said his “American Idol” co-star Luke Bryan had jokingly suggested alcohol as another way to hydrate.

He Was Also Hospitalized in June

Richie’s latest hospital stay comes just months after another health scare during the current “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

In June, Richie became ill during a concert in St. Paul, Minnesota, and cut the performance short after telling the audience he felt dizzy. He was subsequently taken to a hospital and postponed two shows so he could rest and recover.

During that performance, Richie poked fun at the unusual circumstances, telling the crowd, “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down.”

He returned to the stage June 30 and continued with the tour.

The St. Louis incident marked the second time this summer that Richie’s health has interrupted his performances.

Despite the latest hospitalization, the singer was able to complete his Aug. 29 show before seeking medical attention.

Richie’s next scheduled concert is Sept. 26 in San Francisco, giving him several weeks before he is expected back onstage. The singer has not publicly detailed the results of his cardiac testing.

For now, the singer is home in Los Angeles and recovering. His latest health issue prompted concern because of his previous onstage episode, but his return home provides a more positive development for fans who have been following the situation.
