“American Idol” season 24 delivered an unforgettable 20th high school reunion during its May 4th episode, as fan favorites from the Class of 2006 returned to perform duets with this season’s Top 5 finalists, including season 5 winner Taylor Hicks.
However, there were even more surprises in store for the special reunion episode, as original judge Randy Jackson returned as a mentor for the Top 5, while Paula Abdul rejoined the judges’ panel alongside Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan. It was a moment that Abdul has since shared she will “never forget.”

Paula Abdul was met with an outpouring of love and support as she made her iconic return to the “American Idol” judges’ panel for season 24 during its May 4th 20th high school reunion special.
Abdul sat next to Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan as they all critiqued the Top 5 finalists. It was a memorable night for Abdul and fans alike, marking a nostalgic full-circle moment since her departure from the panel following season 8 in 2009.
After her appearance, Abdul took to Instagram to share what an incredible time she had back in the judges’ chair and surrounded by fan-favorites from season 5, marking 20 years since they performed on the Idol stage.
“Last night was something I’ll never forget ❣️ Being back on the @americanidol stage truly felt like being home again. Celebrating the Class of 2006 and seeing some of my “kids” now all grown up was incredibly emotional for me 🥹,” she touchingly shared, along with photos of that night and hanging out with season 5 alums like Taylor Hicks and Bucky Covington.
“Watching the semifinalists and their passion reminded me exactly why this show has always meant so much to me,” Abdul continued.
The singer then congratulated the Top 3 finalists, who include Hannah Harper, Keyla Richardson, and Jordan McCullough. “your journeys are just beginning ❤️,” she shared.

DisneyAbdul let her emotions show that night when host Ryan Seacrest asked the original judge how it felt being back in the judges’ chair.
“I’m just so happy to be at my old home and to see some of my children that are now grown and have kids, and meeting the new hopefuls,” Abdul said, adding, “I hope all of you have the best time ever and leave your heart out there.”
Not only did Abdul return to the judges’ panel, but original judge, Randy Jackson, was also on hand to mentor the remaining Top 5 contestants, who each sang their hearts out as pros from “Dancing With the Stars” joined them on stage in a never-before crossover event.
The second round of performances saw the contestants team up with season 5 alums for a series of standout duets. Keyla Richardson performed alongside season 5 winner Taylor Hicks, while Chris Tungseth was joined by Bucky Covington. Braden Rumfelt sang with Paris Bennett, Hannah Harper shared the stage with Kellie Pickler in a rare performance from the alum, and Jordan McCullough was paired with Elliot Yamin.
DisneyAt the end of the night, the Top 5 was narrowed down to the Top 3: Keyla Richardson, Hannah Harper, and Jordan McCullough made it through, which meant Chris Tungseth and Braden Rumfelt were sent home.
‘American Idol’ Season 24 Finale Performances
DisneyOne more epic night of “American Idol” remains as the Top 3 contestants head to the finale on May 11. According to TV Insider, the finale will include a lineup of special performances, with country legends Brad Paisley and Lee Ann Womack taking the stage. “American Idol” alum Clay Aiken will also perform, as will the three judges.
Harper, who has been a fan favorite throughout the competition, will be singing alongside Womack after she was surprised by producers backstage with a video from the country icon. Harper shared the exciting news on Instagram. “I truly don’t even have the words… I get to sing with @leeannwomack , y’all. 😭✨. This doesn’t feel real. What an absolute honor,” she captioned her post.
Additionally, there will also be performances by Blues Traveler, Cameron Whitcomb, En Vogue, Jason Mraz, Nelly, Shinedown, Tori Kelly, and Motley Crue.
Of course, the remaining three contestants will also take the stage for their one last shot at winning it all and being crowned the winner of “American Idol” season 24.
