“Enjoy it while we’re here,” she added, as host Andy Cohen responded, “That is something to live by every day.”

Diagnosis Revealed in Personal Essay

Peet first revealed her diagnosis in a personal essay for The New Yorker, published March 21, where she shared that she had been diagnosed with Stage 1, hormone-receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer.

She explained that the news came after what she expected to be a routine checkup, a moment that quickly shifted into something more serious.

“For many years, I’ve been told that I have “dense” and “busy” breasts – not as a compliment but as a warning that they require extra monitoring,” she wrote.

“I had been seeing a breast surgeon every six months for checkups. The Friday before Labor Day, I went for what I thought would be a routine scan.”

After her doctor noticed something concerning during the ultrasound, a biopsy was recommended. It was a small moment that carried a deeper weight.

“After the procedure, she said that she would walk the sample over to Cedars-Sinai and hand-deliver it to Pathology. That’s when I knew.”

‘Cancer Diagnoses Come in a Slow Drip’

Peet described the experience of receiving her diagnosis as gradual and emotionally complex.

The day after her biopsy, she was told the tumor appeared small, but additional testing would be needed.

“I was happier than I’d been pre-diagnosis, when I was just a regular person who didn’t have cancer.”

“But after about 10 minutes, I remembered that I still needed the MRI and regressed to baseline terror.”

Reflecting on the process, she added, “It was dawning on me that cancer diagnoses come in a slow drip.”

Family, Loss, and Navigating a Difficult Chapter

t the time of her diagnosis, Peet was also facing profound personal loss, as both of her parents were in hospice care on opposite coasts.

Her father passed away shortly after entering hospice.

“I didn’t make it before my father took his last breath, but I got to see his body before it was taken from his apartment.”

She later returned to Los Angeles to be with her mother, who was in the final stages of Parkinson’s disease.

Peet chose not to tell her mother about her diagnosis or her father’s passing, instead sharing a quiet, emotional moment together.

“I wasn’t sure whether my mom knew that she was looking at me or whether I was just a constellation of interesting, disembodied shapes.”

“I said “howdy doodle” – that’s how she often greeted me. But then I realized that she was communing without words, and I followed suit. Time was running out, and, besides, I had already told her everything.”

Peet, who shares three children with her husband David Benioff, also spoke about how her family has responded to her diagnosis.

“They’ve been great,” she said. “I definitely had to get myself together before including them.”

“The hard part was realizing that nothing is certain and there was going to be no perfect time to tell them.”

As she continues to navigate what comes next, Peet’s words offer a sense of strength and perspective.
