From Anderson Cooper to the various figures of the “Real Housewives” franchise, Bravo’s Andy Cohen has plenty of famous friends. But none of them is quite as fascinating to many as his close friendship with musician John Mayer.
Mayer is just as well known for his extensive collection of hit songs as he is for his celebrity exes. Thanks to his comments about his romance with Jessica Simpson and Taylor Swift’s documentation of their drama in “Dear John,” his relationship history has become a source of fascination.
Cohen and Mayer became fast friends after meeting more than a decade ago. Due to their public displays of affection, both have had to clarify that their friendship is truly platonic. In a recent interview, Cohen revealed exactly how “physical” their friendship really is.

During an appearance on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast, she asked the “Watch What Happens Live” host what a night out with Mayer looks like.
“It is us going to dinner,” he began. “We always sit on the same side of the booth — we sit next to each other always. That is our spot.”
“I do, as the night goes on, find myself sinking into him, because he’ll have his arm around me, and I do,” he continued. “And, as a matter of fact, we were at the Sunset Tower last week, and I was getting so physical with him by the end that he was like, ‘Andy.”
But, while he admitted that they “love each other deeply,” it’s purely platonic. However, he wouldn’t object to a Mayer clone.
“If I could find a gay guy that was him, it would be magic,” he added.
John Mayer Has Addressed his Friendship with Andy Cohen Head-On
Cohen has often defended his friendship with Mayer from haters, but Mayer has been vocal, as well. After The Hollywood Reporter noted to Cohen that his “friendship with Mayer has been the subject of intense speculation,” Mayer addressed the topic in a statement to THR.
“I think that to suggest that people are dubious of a friendship like mine and Andy’s is to undermine the public’s ability to accept and understand diversity in all facets of culture, be it in art or in real life,” John wrote. “I’d like to think they’re sophisticated enough to see a relationship like ours without assuming it must include a sexual component. That turns the concept of being gay into an ignorantly two-dimensional one, which I know you know it’s not. I don’t question that at all.”

“John had really long hair and a hat,” Andy recalled. “We start shopping, and we’re walking around, and all of a sudden, I see paparazzi down the block.”
“I turn to Ricky and I go, ‘Is this John Mayer that we’re with right now?’” He continued. “I didn’t recognize that it was you because, as you know, I’m really bad with faces and this and that. And he goes, ‘Yeah.’ I was like, ‘Oh, wow, this is John Mayer. OK.’”
