A new face quietly entered “Southern Charm” season 11 — and viewers almost missed it. Dr. Stephen Hammond has not been a major part of the season’s early conversation and is notably absent from the season 11 trailer. Still, he made his official debut in Episode 6 when he showed up at Patricia Altschul and Whitney Sudler-Smith’s annual gentlemen’s dinner, where he quickly made an impression on the group.
‘Southern Charm’ Gentlemen’s Dinner Introduces Dr. Stephen Hammond
This year’s gentlemen’s dinner comes with an East Asian theme, and Altschul highlights the dragon on her china as a symbol of love and friendship. She even suggests that the energy of the night could help Austen Kroll and Craig Conover move forward after their recent issues.
Kroll, however, admits he is not looking forward to the evening. Audrey also seems unimpressed by some of Conover’s comments about her relationship, adding tension before the dinner even begins.
Whitner Slagsvol attends the gathering as a first-timer, and Hammond joins as Sudler-Smith’s British doctor friend.
While Sudler-Smith appears less focused on criticizing Shep Rose this year, he still takes issue with Rose’s casual outfit choice for the formal evening.
Dr. Hammond Makes a Strong First Impression — Then Commits a Classic ‘Southern Charm’ Mistake
Hammond arrives at the dinner prepared, immediately winning points with Altschul by bringing a hostess gift of high-end champagne. Unlike some of the other guests, he takes the event seriously from the moment he walks in, earning praise from Altschul, who tells him she has “heard so many wonderful things” about him.
She also compliments his formal look and welcomes him into her Charleston home.
As the evening continues, Altschul explains the pattern of gentlemen’s dinners to the newcomers.
“Usually something disastrous happens,” Altschul tells them. “There’s been chairs being broken; red wine being spilled on the white sofa. And what I’m hoping for is having all you elegant gentlemen, it’ll all be civilized.”
For a while, it seems like the night might actually stay calm. But as the dinner winds down, Hammond stands to give a toast — and appears to break an antique chair in the process.
The moment instantly turns into a rite of passage. The group starts chanting, “One of us!” while Kroll lifts the chair into the air as the men laugh at the latest dinner disaster.
Altschul, meanwhile, is less entertained, reacting in a confessional with a blunt: “I can’t, I just can’t.”
Hammond tries to keep things light, saying, “Luckily, I’m one of the few [who] can afford it.”
Dr. Hammond’s Background and Family Life
Rose shares additional details about Hammond during the episode, calling his background “fascinating,” while acknowledging he may not have every detail perfect.
“His father was a British man who went to Nigeria to be the physician for the ruling party of the time,” Rose explains. “And he ended up marrying and having children with the daughter of one of the ruling-class people down there.”
Rose says the family later moved to London, and Hammond followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a doctor.
“And now Stephen’s a doctor as well, like his dad,” Rose adds. “It’s just really cool.”
According to his Instagram, Hammond works as a board-certified dermatopathologist in South Carolina, a specialty that combines dermatology and pathology. His social media also shows that he is married to Alicia Hammond, and the couple share a daughter named Olive.
