Nicolas Cage’s Malibu mansion has suffered major damage after a massive sinkhole swallowed part of the beachfront property’s driveway.
The collapse happened Tuesday morning at the oceanfront home Cage purchased for $10.5 million in 2024, according to TMZ.
Images from the scene show a huge crater stretching across the driveway and into part of the surrounding area, with construction cones placed around the damaged section.
It Happened on Tuesday
The sinkhole was estimated to measure roughly 30 feet by 30 feet, according to KTLA. Officials said coastal erosion caused the collapse as high surf continued pounding the Southern California coastline.
Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the vacant property around 5:45 a.m. after a suspected gas main break. Crews discovered the collapsed driveway and brought in Southern California Gas Company workers, who shut off the damaged gas line.
The erosion also damaged a water line beneath the property.
Crews were seen working around and beneath the collapsed driveway as officials assessed the situation and monitored the area for additional structural problems.
No injuries were reported, and the residence was unoccupied. The home also appeared to be undergoing renovations when the collapse occurred.
The Home Sustained a Lot of Damage
KTLA reporter Rich Prickett, who was covering the incident from the air, described the damage while surveying the property.
“Substantial damage done to this home, or at least the driveway to this home here in Malibu,” he said.
“It doesn’t appear that anybody was home. As a matter of fact, the house looks like it is under some sort of renovation.”
The collapse came as Malibu was dealing with unusually rough coastal conditions. High surf and erosion have affected multiple areas along the shoreline, with another Malibu driveway also collapsing Tuesday.
The situation is especially notable given the home’s location directly along the ocean. Malibu officials have warned that coastal erosion can weaken areas beneath structures and increase the risk of partial or complete collapse.
Cage’s property is a roughly 4,000-square-foot residence featuring expansive ocean views, glass walls, multiple bedrooms and a rooftop deck with a jacuzzi. The property also has access to a secluded stretch of beach.
Cage purchased the home through a trust in 2024, according to The New York Times. Its previous owners were members of the Liberman family, who had owned the property since the 1990s.
Lenard Liberman, co-founder of Liberman Broadcasting, confirmed the sale to The New York Times at the time.
“Yes, Nicolas Cage bought our home in Malibu,” Liberman told the newspaper.
The home was originally listed for $11.25 million in March 2024 and was also offered as a rental for $25,000 per month.
Liberman previously explained that his father built the residence and considered it a special retreat for the family.
“My parents would go on weekends and it was my father’s ‘happy place,’” Liberman told the Times.
After his father died, however, his mother struggled to return because of the memories attached to the house.
“My father passed away, and my mom just couldn’t go to the house anymore. Too many memories,” he explained.
For now, officials are continuing to assess the damage and the property’s structural condition as crews work to address the erosion and damaged utility lines. It remains unclear how extensive the impact on the residence itself will ultimately be.
