Iconic Country Music Songwriter Passes Away at 78 & Tributes Pour In

Jim McBride, a prolific and influential figure in country music whose songwriting contributions helped shape the sound of the genre for decades, has died at the age of 78.

The veteran songwriter — known especially for co-writing beloved hits like “Chattahoochee” and “Chasing That Neon Rainbow” — passed away on January 6, 2026, following an unexpected fall earlier in the afternoon, according to close friends and music community sources.

McBride’s Impressive Career

A native of Huntsville, Alabama, McBride was a member of both the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, honors that reflect his deep and lasting impact on country music.

In addition to his many chart-topping collaborations, McBride’s works were recorded by some of the genre’s most respected performers, including Reba McEntire, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Jones and many others who helped introduce his songwriting to listeners around the world.

McBride’s career spanned several decades, beginning with humble roots — inspired by country radio and a lifelong love of storytelling through music — and culminating in hits that became staples of the country repertoire.

His collaborations with Alan Jackson were particularly celebrated: together, they crafted songs that resonated with authenticity and heart, solidifying both men’s places in the history of modern country.

Hits like “Chattahoochee,” which celebrated small-town life and youthful energy, earned industry recognition including a CMA Song of the Year award and multiple accolades from ASCAP, BMI, and other music associations.

Friends and Fans React

Music fans and fellow artists reacted with sadness upon news of McBride’s passing, with longtime friend and songwriter Jerry Salley sharing that McBride’s death was shocking.

“I never dreamed when I woke up this morning that I would receive the shocking news that I received,” Salley heartbreakingly wrote.

He added, “You were a great songwriter. You were a great man. And, you were an even greater friend. What hurts the most is that I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.”

He finished his post by saying he knows the two will meet again.

“But, someday we will be writing songs again for eternity, and praising the God we both worship!! Rest In Peace my Brother. I love you, and will miss you, our conversations, our adventures and all the laughter we shared till then,” he concluded.

Salley described him as a treasured friend as well as a creative force whose influence extended far beyond his own catalog.

Other fans expressed their sadness over the news.

“Rest in peace. He wrote some of the best songs,” one fan wrote.

Another added, “A true legend in his time. He will be dearly missed.”
