James Van Der Beek wanted to share his cancer journey with the world. The late “Dancing With the Stars” dancer was penning a memoir throughout his battle with colorectal cancer, according to Deadline.
James Van Der Beek Was Writing a Memoir
Fans of the late “Dawson’s Creek” star may get a chance to read about his life in his own words. The beloved actor was working on a memoir in the last years of his life, though it’s unclear when or if the book will be released publicly.
“Van Der Beek had been quietly working on his memoir between work on ‘Elle’, his appearances on Fox’s ‘The Masked Singer’ and Prime Video’s ‘Overcompensating’, in addition to the quality time he was spending with family and staying connected to friends and fans,” Deadline reported on Thursday, February 12. “It is unknown at this time how far he got into writing, or if there are any plans to publish posthumously.”
One man who spent time with Van Der Beek in his final month, as they worked on the upcoming film “The Gates,” was writer-director John Burr.
Burr told Deadline, “[Van Der Beek’s] words were filled with energy and punctuated with exclamation points even as his health must have been in decline.”
In addition to “The Gates,” which premieres next month, Van Der Beek will appear in the upcoming “Legally Blonde” prequel.
James Van Der Beek Tragically Passed Away
Van Der Beek’s family announced his passing in a touching social media tribute on Wednesday, February 11.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come,” the statement read. “For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
The “Varsity Blues” star lost his battle with colorectal cancer, with which he was first diagnosed in August 2023. He fought the disease privately until November 2024, when he shared the devastating news with People.
“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” he said at the time. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
Van Der Beek left behind his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.
