Late “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek overcame years of financial issues before being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, according to a new report.
James Van Der Beek Settled Massive Tax Debt
The former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant and his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, settled a massive tax debt in the years before his cancer diagnosis.
“The IRS declared the duo owed $95,438.31 for 2017, and $173,890.31 in 2019 for a total of $269,328.62,” TMZ reported on Monday, February 16.
According to the outlet, the Van Der Beeks paid off their debt in April 2022.
The “Varsity Blues” star was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023, though he did not publicly reveal his cancer battle until November 2024.
“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” he told People at the time. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
Van Der Beek tragically passed away in February 2026, his family announced.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come,” the statement read. “For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Van Der Beek Family Launched GoFundMe
Following his death, a GoFundMe was launched to help raise funds for Kimberly and their six children.
“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time,” the fundraiser explained. “The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”
Less than a week after its launch, the fundraiser had raised more than $2.5 million.
Just before his death, it appears the late actor was working to secure his family’s future with the purchase of a 34-acre ranch outside of Austin, Texas. Van Der Beek was also working on a memoir, according to Deadline, though it remains unclear whether the book will be released.

I’m sorry but those taxes should be paid like everyone else. No insurance? Tv star? 34 acres of land in Texas? Why have so many kids if you can’t afford them.? Now asking for the public to save you is embarrassing. No family to help?
