Julianne Hough Reflects On Making ‘Dancing With the Stars’ a ‘Timeless’ Hit

Julianne Hough has been involved in some capacity with “Dancing With the Stars” for decades. She began as a pro dancer before stepping away and cheering for her brother, Derek Hough, as he continued with the series. Today, she’s the proud co-host of the long-running series.

While “Dancing With the Stars” is a widely beloved series today, that wasn’t always the case. In a new interview, Julianne Hough reflected on the struggle to popularize the show.

Julianne Hough Admits DWTS Wasn’t Always a Smashing Hit

Julianne Hough was a pro dancer with “Dancing With the Stars” from seasons 4-8. She brought home the Mirrorball trophy in back-to-back seasons in 4 and 5. In season 32, Hough rejoined the series as a co-host, alongside Alfonso Ribeiro.

As fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming 35th season, Julianne Hough admits the series was tough to get off the ground at first. Back in 2005, viewers weren’t quite sure what to expect from a ballroom competition show.

“I mean, this show got turned down so many times at the beginning, because people were like, a ballroom dancing show? Like, what? Is that really a thing?” the DWTS hostess shared with PEOPLE.

Fortunately, the confusion didn’t stick around for long. After over 30 seasons and multiple awards, fans excitedly tune in each fall to see celebrities compete for the highly coveted Mirrorball trophy.

Of course, everyone appreciates excellent storytelling. Julianne Hough believes that’s also key to capturing viewers’ interest.

“To see that it’s been around not only just, like, survived 20 years, but is now thriving more than it ever has, it just goes to show that, like, when you stay in authenticity and integrity of what this show is — which is craftsmanship, just rooting for people to grow and succeed, and go on the journey of transformation, and keep that family experience — that’s timeless,” Hough told the outlet.

The Hostess Can’t Wait For Fans to Meet the Talented Dancers in the Spin-Off

Each year, new faces join the group of professional dancers. This summer, there will be a spin-off as the series hunts for the next pro. Reigning champion Robert Irwin hosts the show while Mark and Shirley Ballas serve as judges.

Julianne Hough feels tremendously proud of the young talent competing for a spot on the show and can’t wait for viewers to meet them.

“To see the level of talent, to see the dedication and the execution, and then to let them get their flowers and be a part of the biggest dance show in the world,” the 37-year-old shared.

Former troupe member Stephani Sosa will be among the hopeful dancers competing this summer. She is the older sister of current pro dancer, Ezra Sosa.

It’ll be several months before fans learn the full season 35 cast list, but there are three confirmed celebrities so far. Reality television stars Ciara Miller and Maura Higgins will compete, as will Savannah Bananas teammate Jackson Olson.

Fans can catch the premiere of “Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro” on Monday, July 13 on ABC. In the fall, “Dancing With the Stars” season 35 will commence.
