Disney Cancels Live-Action Adaptation of Classic Animated Film

A highly anticipated live-action remake of one of Disney’s classic animated films is no longer in production. The director attached to the project has confirmed that “Robin Hood” has been scrapped and will no longer move forward, putting an end to the reimagining of the 1973 film.

Disney has worked on a number of live-action remakes of its animated film library, including the likes of “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” and “Dumbo.”

Director Confirms That Disney Has Canceled ‘Robin Hood’ Live-Action Adaptation

During an AMA on Reddit, Mexican director Carlos López Estrada explained that the project has been cancelled. This was in response to a question from a user who asked about the current progress of the new “Robin Hood” film.

“It’s dead, sadly,” Estrada said. “I say ‘sadly’ because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.”

Estrada added: “I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kari Granlund was writing a script for the project back in 2020, with Justin Springer producing. Granlund  previously wrote the script for the live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp,” while Springer has produced movies such as “Oblivion” and “Dumbo.”

It was planned to have more of a musical element to it compared to the original and would have featured anthropomorphic animals rendered in CGI.

Disney Cancels Two ‘Indiana Jones’ Projects

“Robin Hood” is not the only project that Disney has shuttered over the last few months. In February, it emerged that the company was shelving two “Indiana Jones” spin-offs that had been in the works for a number of years.

Reports from a number of outlets confirmed that the two television projects had been axed. The first was an animated series led by Rodrigo Blass, which would have featured stories featuring the cast of characters from the main films. Acting as an anthology series, it would have told stories between the various feature films that have previously been released.

The second series was a live-action show that would have acted as a prequel. It would have focused on Abner Ravenwood, the father of Marion Ravenwood and mentor to Indiana Jones.

The cancellations likely came on the back of the lack of box office success for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” However, former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained that this move doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the “Indiana Jones” franchise on screen.

She said, “I don’t think Indy will ever be done, but I don’t think anybody is interested right now in exploring it. But these are timeless movies, and Indy will never be done.”
