Actress and Food Network host Valerie Bertinelli has revealed her tender last words to her late ex-husband, musician Eddie Van Halen, on his deathbed.
Guitarist, keyboardist, backing vocalist, and songwriter Van Halen passed away in 2020 at the age of 65. He had been battling throat cancer and oral cancer in the years preceding his death, but ultimately died following a stroke at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
Bertinelli and Van Halen’s marriage lasted for 26 years, from 1981 until 2007. The pair met at one of Van Halen’s concerts in 1980. They had one son, Wolfgang Van Halen — a musician, singer, and songwriter in his own right — who was born in 1991.
The last words Bertinell said to Van Halen made it clear they still held each other in high regard.
Valerie Bertinelli Told Eddie Van Halen She Loved Him
GettyPer Page Six, in her new memoir, “Getting Naked: The Quiet Work of Becoming Perfectly Imperfect,” which released on March 10, it’s revealed that Valerie Bertinelli told Eddie Van Halen she loved him on his deathbed.
A passage in her new book says, “My final words to him when he was taking his last breath in the hospital were, ‘I love you.'”
Although they had split 13 years prior to Van Halen’s passing, primarily due to his alcoholism, Bertinelli’s final words to him prove she held no ill feeling towards the father of her only child.
Of their relationship, Bertinelli says, it was “a flawed love, but it was real.”
Van Halen was, of course, one of the founding members of the iconic rock band Van Halen, which he founded with his drummer brother Alex Van Halen in 1972.
