Longtime Hallmark star Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe is bravely sharing each step of her breast cancer journey with fans, including facing hard things like potential hair loss from chemotherapy.
On October 20, 2025, the “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” actress, who revealed 10 days earlier that she’d been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, posted on social media that she headed into her second chemotherapy infusion wearing a cold cap. The therapy tactic has been shown to reduce the amount of chemo-induced hair loss in some patients, per the American Cancer Society. From trying on wigs to cutting her hair shorter, Lowe is facing this side effect of treatment with humor and hope.
Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe Shares Video From Chemo Infusion Center
Lowe’s first step in her treatment plan is 12 weeks of chemo, her dear friend and co-star Kristin Booth shared in her Instagram Stories shortly after Lowe shared her diagnosis in an essay written for People magazine.
In that essay, Lowe said that before a double mastectomy, she would be receiving weekly infusions of Doxorubicin. The chemo is nicknamed “The Red Devil” by many patients because of its bright red color, toxicity, and potentially harsh side effects, per the Moffitt Cancer Center. But to feel more in control of the situation, Lowe shared on Instagram that she’d decided to name her chemo after the red-headed warrior Agnes.
At the infusion center, Lowe filmed herself joking around as she stuck maxi pads to her cheeks and face to protect her skin from the freezing cold cap. The next view was of her in her infusion chair, with the cap wrapped around her head and strapped under her chin.
“So, I’m cold capping and this is what my life is like now,” she said with a smirk. “I feel like my face looks like a Snapchat memoji. It’s really cold and I can’t hear anything because I have maxi pads on my face.”
Shaking her head, she said again, “This is my life. How’s your morning going?”
In the caption of her post, Lowe shared, “The idea is to use dry ice to freeeze the hair follicles so that your hair doesn’t fall out. Unfortunately I was too overwhelmed to start week one so I started week two which only gives you a 50/50 chance to keep your hair. This requires a ton of help from a partner of a friend but honestly I believe it’s always worth trying everything!”
Thinking of Losing Her Hair Has Been the ‘Toughest’ Part of Journey So Far
In a time lapse photo of her getting her cut into a shoulder-length bob on October 18, Lowe wrote, “Ok…let’s talk hair. I’m not gonna lie. The hair journey has been the toughest by far. When you first get diagnosed you immediately go to…oh no, I’m gonna lose everything. My boobs, my hair, life as I know it.”
“But underneath it’s really about losing control,” she reasoned. “The fear of the unknown has been by far…the worst part of this journey. I read that cutting your hair shorter helps mitigate that feeling. And when your hair does fall out it’s not as traumatizing because it’s smaller clumps. So that’s what I did. I got a cute bob for the first time ever. If your going through what I am. This is a nice way to get some control back ❤️”
In another video, she had a little fun trying on different wigs, including a purple one she said was her favorite.
After Lowe completes chemo, she’ll have a double mastectomy, radiation, and reconstruction surgeries, she shared with People. She has a circle of friends who’ve helped raise over $10,000 through a GoFundMe campaign for expenses, given that she can’t work much during treatment, and she said Hallmark has pushed back production on a “Hannah Swensen Mystery” she’s set to direct.
Lowe also has two kids — a nine-year-old daughter and three-year-old son with her husband, Mike Tomasevich.
