Hallmark movies are known for their cozy small-town settings and familiar romance beats, but the network’s latest project suggests something slightly different is taking shape.
With “Kentucky Roses” connecting directly to the Kentucky Derby and filming at Churchill Downs, the upcoming release is not just another original movie. It’s part of a growing pattern that brings Hallmark stories to real-world locations and events.
According to Today, the film will premiere on Kentucky Derby Day. Hallmark filmed it at the iconic racetrack itself, giving it a level of authenticity that goes beyond the network’s typical fictional settings. The network has always leaned into comforting and familiar storytelling. Projects like this suggest the brand is expanding how those stories are built.
Hallmark is Leaning Into Real-World Partnerships
Getty“Kentucky Roses” is not the only example. In recent years, Hallmark has quietly teamed up with major organizations and destinations. These movies double as real-world collaborations.
Yahoo! reported that the network partnered with the National Football League on holiday films tied to specific team and fan bases. The projects blend sports culture with its signature romance formula. It also worked with the Grand Ole Opry on a project that extended beyond the screen, including themed experiences and product tie-ins, according to MusicRow.
More recently, Hallmark announced a film collaboration with The Walt Disney Company that will be filmed at Walt Disney World, marking one of its most high-profile partnerships yet, according to Variety.
Taken together, these projects point to a broader shift. Hallmark is moving beyond fictional towns and standalone stories. The network is building movies around places, brands, and cultural events.
Why ‘Kentucky Roses’ Stands Out
While Hallmark has experimented with partnerships before, “Kentucky Roses” stands out because of how closely it is tied to a real event.
The Kentucky Derby already carries its own traditions, visuals, and built-in audience. The story is set in that world and filmed on location at Churchill Downs. That gives the movie a level of authenticity that is hard to replicate in a traditional Hallmark setting.
It also creates a more immersive experience for viewers. Instead of imagining a fictional festival or town event, audiences are seeing a real one unfold as part of the story.
What This Could Mean for Future Hallmark Movies
GettyFor viewers, the change may feel subtle at first. The core of a Hallmark movie is still the same, with romance, family, and feel-good storytelling at the center. But filming on location or tying a film to a real event adds a different layer to the experience.
It also opens the door for more immersive storytelling. A movie set at Churchill Downs during the Kentucky Derby, for example, brings built-in traditions, visuals, and history that would be difficult to recreate elsewhere.
At the same time, these collaborations allow Hallmark to connect with audiences in new ways. Whether it is sports fans, country music audiences, or theme park visitors, each partnership expands who might tune in.
Nothing about the network’s core identity is changing overnight. But with projects like “Kentucky Roses” leading the way, it is becoming clearer that Hallmark is exploring how to blend its signature style with real-world experiences in a way that feels fresh without losing what fans already love.

I would like to see Ryan Petre back again. I’m not sure of the spelling I have been disapointed in a lot of the premier movies, not good.
Can’t wait for The Kentucky Roses movie. Has always been a dream of mine to go to all three triple crown races in same year. I remember back when Alysheba won the first two legs Kentucky Derby then onto win The Preakness. I remember I was working in Connecticut at the time the commissioner had a race horse his secretary and were friends and I remember looking to see who was running in the Derby. I had never bet before but there was this horse Alysheba, I often go by the name Ali so I bet totally on the name and guess who won I did very well. So naturally I bet again on Aly again with Mike Smith as the jockey third time unfortunately was not the charm. I was hooked ever since. So I usually I go with a horse whose name speaks to me. So can’t wait til the movie comes out.
