Seven months into being a first-time grandma, Hallmark star and “Back To The Future” alum Lea Thompson, 64, is savoring every moment she can get of her new role.
On September 3, 2025, “The Chicken Sisters” star posted a series of sweet family photos, including one of her holding her granddaughter by the ocean, kissing her forehead as the sun shone down on them. Little Robbie June Carlisle was born on February 2 to Maddie Deutch, one of two grown daughters Thompson shares with her husband, movie and TV director Howard Deutch.
“I’m called Glamma and I love it, kind of with a New York accent,” Thompson laughed while talking to EntertainmentNow in August. “It’s amazing. What a blessing. And I’m so excited to watch her grow. They grow so fast!”
Lea Thompson Jokes Her Granddaughter is Destined to Be a Country Star
Thompson, who’s had a busy 2025 filming projects including “The Chicken Sisters,” for which she directed the first two episodes of the new season, told EntertainmentNow that she relies on FaceTime to check in with Maddie and the baby when she has to be away.
“She’s so cute, and she’s got a great, good name,” Thompson said, adding with a southern accent, “She’s going to be a country western singer, I think, because her name is Robbie June Carlisle.”
Fortunately, Thompson did manage to squeeze in and soak up snuggles and kisses with her grandbaby over the summer.
In her summer sendoff post, Thompson wrote, “I hope you had some fun this summer! I feel so blessed to have had some time with my friends and family. Being a Glamma is even more fabulous than I could’ve ever imagined. To September we go! Hope I remember to enjoy it!!!! 🥰🥰🥰”
Lea Thompson Hopes Her Projects, Like ‘The Chicken Sisters,’ Help Women Realize They Can Do Anything at Any Age
Thompson has relished the chance to juggle her professional passions and family life for decades. But she told EntertainmentNow that some people think she disappeared after “Back To The Future,” which will return to theaters for its 40th anniversary in October.
“There’s a lot of people I run into, people who kind of think that I haven’t done anything for 40 years,” Thompson chuckled. “But I have managed to have an incredibly fulfilling career, meet so many wonderful people, and try so many different things. It’s just a blessing. You know, I’ve been on Broadway, I’ve done a sitcom, done a bunch of movies. I went to Sundance, I’ve directed my own tiny movie. I had two kids!”
Part of Thompson’s motivation to star in “The Chicken Sisters” — alongside a strong, female primary cast that includes Wendie Malick, Genevieve Angelson, and Schuyler Fisk — was that it reminds women not to let aging keep them from thriving.
“You know your life isn’t over at 50 or 30 or 40 or whatever,” she told EntertainmentNow. “We all continue to be works in progress. We all have conflicts, and you can resolve it. We all need girlfriends. It’s so important to have a community of friends who support you. It’s very, very important. I hope (the show) reminds you to nurture those connections.”
Thompson’s next big project is directing “Anna Pigeon,” a crime drama that will air on USA after years of trying to make it happen. After that, she’s hoping for another season of “The Chicken Sisters,” noting that both shows fulfill her goal of “working with people that you admire and you are inspired by.” She’d also love to work with her daughters and husband, but said she’s always open to trying new things.
“I’ve always tried to jump in the cold water do things that I’m scared of, because it keeps me going,” Thompson said. “It keeps me knowing that if I take a chance, I’ll make it through. And I think that keeps you young and vital, and still in the game.”
“The Chicken Sisters” airs Sunday nights on Hallmark Channel at 8 p.m. Eastern time and is available to stream on Hallmark+.
