In this age of popular reboots and series revivals, Hallmark star Stacey Farber says she doesn’t think she would revisit one of her most iconic roles.
Farber’s latest project was playing Amy in Hallmark’s newest movie, “I’ll Be Seeing You,” which also stars Tyler Hynes and Christine Ebersole. However, many fans know her best from her time on the Canadian teen drama “Degrassi: The Next Generation.”
Us Weekly asked Farber if she thought she could ever consider a return to a new version of “Degrassi.” She paused before admitting she didn’t think she could.
Stacey Farber Says ‘Degrassi’ Was Filmed in a ‘Different Era’
Farber explained that she simply didn’t think a revival of “Degrassi” would necessarily even work these days. She also didn’t think it should be attempted.
She shared, “I don’t know if we should. It’s one of those things that I think is so well done and left in its time period.”
The “I’ll Be Seeing You” star continued, “It’s even, like, when I was on it so long ago, we didn’t have social media, we didn’t have smartphones. It was awesome, because it was that different era of representing the high school experience.”
Because things are so different now, in the world in general as well as specifically in high schools, Farber admitted, “I don’t even know how we would do it now. It would just be a completely different thing.”
Farber Has Come a Long Way Since Her ‘Degrassi’ Days
“Degrassi: The Next Generation” debuted in October 2001 on Canada’s CTV network, moving to MTV Canada for its later seasons. It also aired on Noggin in the United States.
The series was the next chapter in the “Degrassi” universe, which initially began with “The Kids of Degrassi Street” in 1979.
“Degrassi Junior High” premiered in 1987, followed by “Degrassi High” in 1989. A television movie titled “School’s Out” aired in 1992 and wrapped things up for the franchise, at the time.
The sequel series began development in 1999. By the time it premiered, it became “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” Although the series shifted in format and structure over the course of its full run, “Degrassi” continued until August 2015.
Farber joined the series in season 2, playing Ellie Nash. She stayed through season 8. “Degrassi: The Next Generation” also starred Nina Dobrev, Drake, and Shenae Grimes, who were relative unknowns at the time.
The Hallmark star has kept plenty busy since her “Degrassi” days.
In addition to starring in “I’ll Be Seeing You,” she played Darby Spencer in Hallmark’s “The Spencer Sisters.” Fans may also recognize her from other gigs that included “Virgin River,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “Diggstown,” and “Brilliant Minds.”
While Farber may not want to revisit her Degrassi days in the form of a reboot or revival, she posts positively about the experience on social media. Fans still love her character.
In a pinned post on her Instagram page from September 2024, Farber wrote about her transition from Degrassi. Fans still comment on the post to share their love for her both now and then.
On April 24, one fan wrote, “Ellie will always live on thanks to you. Thank you for giving us one of the most relatable characters and making her seem so real and natural.”
