With three marriages behind her, Christina Haack is weighing in on former HGTV stars Jen and Brandon Hatmaker’s divorce. See Haack’s words of wisdom about how to best navigate the inevitable headlines and comments.
Christina Haack Shares Advice for Jen & Brandon Hatmaker
Jen and Brandon, who starred in the short-lived HGTV series “My Big Family Renovation,” divorced in 2020. In her new book, “Awake,” Jen details how she discovered that Brandon was cheating on her.
In an October 2025 interview with Us Weekly, Haack, who has three ex-husbands (Tarek El Moussa, Ant Anstead, and Josh Hall), shared her approach to dealing with her personal life making headlines.
“My publicist [and] my best friend is right here [and] what she taught me at the beginning is … you have to ignore it,” she said.
Haack continued, “If you buy into it, no matter how much you’re hurting, no matter how much you want your story out there, like, it’ll never end.”
The HGTV star added, “So I think my best advice is to, like, just try to stay in your tight knit group and literally, do not Google. Don’t read the comments.”
“I feel very bad for them,” she said, adding that it’s “so hard to go through that publicly.”
Jen Hatmaker Reveals Why She Wrote About Her Marriage & Divorce
On September 12, Jen took to Instagram to share the message that she posted on September 7, 2020, announcing, “Brandon and I are getting divorced.”
She wrote at the time that “the details are ours alone,” calling it “unexpected,” and noting how “shocked, grief-stricken, and broken-hearted” she felt.
Jen noted in her 2025 post caption: “A recurring question I get is: ‘Why did you write such a vulnerable book?’ It’s a good question. Why would I want to share the worst moments of my life? Why would I disclose all my own [expletive]? How could I possibly admit to the whole world the red flags I ignored? Why would I open myself up for critique to a voyeuristic culture obsessed with schadenfreude?”
She continued, “When I shockingly lost my marriage in July 2020, I was completely frozen. I went radio silent. I cancelled my entire work calendar. I didn’t even know how to get through the day, much less carry on with the visible part of my life.”
“But when a ‘Christian journalist’ exposed my divorce filing to ‘keep Christian leaders accountable’ and attracted the venom of the internet before we’d even told our whole family, I was forced to tell you, my community, the next day before I was ready,” she shared. “God, the way my hands shook typing out that post, which I’m reposting here.”
