HGTV Star Hilariously Reveals Husband Threw Up Right After Proposing

Beloved designer Bobby Berk has been happily married for over a decade, despite a hilariously rocky start. On December 26, 2025, the star of HGTV’s new show “Junk or Jackpot” revealed during an appearance on Nicole Byer’s “Why Won’t You Date Me?” podcast that his husband — Dr. Dutron (Dewey) Do — threw up right after proposing in 2012.

Berk clarified that his husband-to-be didn’t vomit out of disgust or nerves, but because their group of friends had accidentally consumed far too much marijuana, which Berk had spontaneously added to a batch of brownies, leading to what he called the “worst drug experience of my entire life.”

Bobby Berk Says His Friends Almost Called an Ambulance the Night Before He Got Engaged

Berk and Do, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, met online and dated for years before getting engaged. Berk told Byer that he even bought them wedding rings in 2009, but set them aside because gay marriage wasn’t legal yet in the U.S. The “Queer Eye” alum said that once it was legal, Do proposed while they were on vacation, staying with friends in Cabo, Mexico.

However, no one was feeling great at the time of the proposal because the night before, Berk did a little experimenting in the kitchen and everyone got so high they could hardly see straight, he admitted.

“There’s always this big bag of weed in the freezer,” he explained to Byer. “It’s just been there for years. And we never touched it. Like, I’m honestly not a big weed person … It’s not for me. I get very in my head and that’s not a fun place. You don’t want to be there.”

Nevertheless, Berk decided that year to make some “pot brownies,” rationalizing that because the weed in his friend’s freezer was so old, he “should use a lot.” He then served everyone huge pieces.

“Worst drug experience of my entire life,” Berk told Byer. “We almost, like, called an ambulance. We were so messed up. Like I was scooting across the floor because the gravity of the earth was so strong. I couldn’t stand up. My husband was, like, running around the house seeing bunny rabbits and throwing up and it was just a horrible thing.”

Bobby Berk Says His Biggest Memory of His Engagement Was ‘Everyone Throwing Up’

The brownie mishap continued to haunt the group the following morning, Berk told Byer on her podcast, as they were scheduled to take a catamaran sailing on the Sea of Cortez.

“I’m like, ‘I can’t get on a boat, I can’t even walk,'” Berk recalled, but he said that his friends insisted he go because it was a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.” What he didn’t realize was that Do had planned the excursion as part of an elaborate proposal and same-day wedding.

Once aboard the boat, Berk noticed that the large sail on the ship featured his company’s logo, and then saw the letters “WYMM” — standing for “Will You Marry Me” — but was still too “messed up” to figure out what it all meant.

“I turn around and Dewey’s on one knee,” Berk recalled, “but then proceeds to lean over the side of the boat and throw up, and then everyone throws up. So that was my proposal. Everyone throwing up.”

Bobby Berk & Dewey Do Discovered They Weren’t Legally Married Months After Their Wedding

In addition to the surprise proposal, Dewey had also planned a surprise same-day wedding. When they headed back to their friend’s house, Berk told Byer, “The doors open, the wedding’s there. The wedding is happening. Friends are there waiting. I’m still stoned.”

Byer exclaimed that it was lucky he had said yes to Do’s proposal, but Berk assured her, “At that point, we had been together for eight, nine years. Like, I wasn’t going anywhere.”

In 2018, Berk told People that he and Dewey learned months after their surprise wedding that the friend who officiated their ceremony never sent in the correct paperwork.

“We found out at the end of the year when we were like, ‘Why did we never receive our marriage certificate?’ that technically we weren’t married,” he told the outlet. “We had to frantically run to the courthouse in downtown New York City to get married before the end of the year to make sure our taxes were filed properly.”

Berk’s “Junk or Jackpot,” in which he helps overwhelmed homeowners sort through their belongings to discover hidden fortune, premiered on December 26 and airs Friday nights at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time. It’s also available to stream on HBO Max and discovery+.
