Tiffany Brooks Reveals She Was Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes In 2013

In 2013, just before she learned if she was the winner of HGTV Design Star, Brooks opened up about her Type 1 diabetes diagnosis in a blog post.

“10 years ago to the day I was lying 7.5 months pregnant in a hospital bed at Northwestern University. I have had juvenile diabetes since the age of 6 and it was now taking a toll on my kidneys, and my unborn son,” she wrote. “They told me that once I deliver, my kidneys would be in a downward spiral that they could not stop.”

She ultimately delivered her baby four weeks premature, but afterwards she underwent dialysis three times a week. She then had a kidney transplant five months after beginning dialysis, and then a year later, she had a pancreas transplant.
