HGTV favorite Jasmine Roth opened up about her difficult nursing journey with 17-month-old daughter Darla in an effort to help other new moms who may feel “inadequate.”
Jasmine Roth Shares Her Nursing Journey
The “Help! I Wrecked My House” star took to social media on Wednesday, February 11, to explain how she and her youngest daughter overcame their struggles after a “rough start.”
“I wasn’t ready to talk about this until now,” Roth began in her lengthy post. “I finished my nursing journey with Darla at 1 year, and it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”
The mother of two, who also shares 5-year-old daughter Hazel with her husband Brett Roth, explained that Darla was born premature. She arrived a month early and weighed just 4 pounds, 8 ounces.
“She needed a feeding tube and oxygen while she was in the hospital. She’s one of those babies that really did need modern medicine to survive, and I’m so grateful that she had that early intervention,” Roth added. “I pumped milk in the hospital, and we did lots of skin-to-skin so she still had the benefits of breastfeeding, but it wasn’t the experience we were expecting. I didn’t have a chance to really try nursing until her feeding tube was removed when she was 1 month old. I considered just giving up then, but something pushed me to keep going.”
She went on to explain that she worked with a lactation coach, while Darla started “myofacial, occupational, and cranial sacral therapy to help her functionality.”
Between her doctors appointments, Darla’s pediatrician visits, and her multiple therapies, Roth said, “It literally felt like we had an appointment every single day.”
“We were making a little bit of progress, but feeding was still very inefficient and painful for me,” she continued.
It was eventually discovered that Darla was suffering from a tongue tie and double lip ties and would need to undergo a laser procedure to correct it.
“I was nervous to put her through any additional trauma after what she had already been through, but she could barely eat from a bottle, let alone nurse. She was so tiny and she had to be able to eat to grow,” Roth continued, adding that there was immediate improvement after surgery.
The “Rock the Block” alum is hoping to help other moms who may “feel inadequate.
“It was a journey and it was so amazing to not be on it alone.”
Roth Previously Opened Up About Infertility
Roth revealed that she and her husband had a difficult time conceiving their second child, which she wrote about in an essay for Motherly.
“Secondary infertility isn’t something that a lot of people (myself included) know about. I always thought that once you have a child, getting pregnant the next time around was easy,” she wrote in September 2024. “Now I know that not only is secondary infertility extremely common, it’s coupled with a whole set of different challenges that most people don’t consider when thinking about infertility.”
