Jenny Marrs is sharing a peaceful look at the morning after a very scary night on the farm. The HGTV star detailed how an unexpected late-night situation sent her family into action as they worked to get everyone safely back home.
Jenny Marrs Shares Details of Scary Farm Animal Escape
On August 10, Marrs took to Instagram to share the details of a late-night farm adventure that had her family in a panic.
“I’m so thankful for this peaceful morning on the farm after a little chaos late last night … ” her caption began.
Marrs continued, “As we all settled in bed, we heard a banging on the front door. It startled us all and, once Dave opened the door, our neighbor’s son explained that as he was coming home for the night, he saw a horse, a donkey and an alpaca strolling down our dirt road toward the adjacent highway. He and his mom jumped into action and barricaded the road with their vehicles to push Sadie, Daddy Donk and Alfie back home.”
The Marrs family had their work cut out for them to retrieve the animals.
“We quickly threw on shoes, woke up the kids, and raced outside,” the HGTV star shared. “Ben and Charlotte jumped on the ranger so that she could get Sadie’s halter, I turned right out of the drive in the minivan and Dave went left in his truck. Our neighbor and her son were parked near the Berry Farm and she pointed us in the direction of the animals. She and her son blocked the exits, I called Ben, and we met at the end of an adjacent driveway, where we could see the three musketeers hiding in a cluster of trees.”
Their daughter took the lead with getting the horse. “Charlotte approached alone and slowly, knowing Sadie would respond best to her (they were all very spooked at this point and ready to dart off at any moment),” Marrs shared. “We turned off headlights because they seemed to scare them further which meant Charlotte had to halter a terrified horse in the pitch black of night. After several attempts, and the most calm-under-pressure demeanor, she did it and started to lead Sadie toward the front pasture gate.”
The donkey and the alpaca didn’t follow, however, and ran back toward the trees. Marrs was able to get the animals with the promise of treats.
“I ran to the stable and got a bucket of treats (all still in the dark) as Ben held the pasture gate ready to close. Finally, slowly, with treats in hand, we were able to lead all three into the pasture,” she explained. “We had to remain calm, speak softly and use measured, slow movements.”
They locked the pasture gate and Marrs checked in with her husband, who said their cows were out of the other pasture. “Somehow, the main gate had been flown wide open, letting everyone run free (while scared and confused),” she noted. “After creating a barricade and pushing the cows out of the berry fields, we were able to get them safely back [in the pasture].”

Marrs responded, “Yes it’s never a dull moment for sure!!! Good neighbors are the best!!!”
One worried fan shared, “OMG I held my breath the whole time reading this. Next time please start with ‘all animals are ok’ … ha!!!”
When asked, “Did one of them learn how to open gates?” Marrs replied, “We have no idea what happened!!! It’s a mystery for sure.”
