It’s hard to believe it’s been more than 15 years since “Property Brothers” first premiered on HGTV—and Drew and Jonathan Scott are the first to admit they’ve come a long way.
The brothers revisited the very first episode of their hit series, and they had plenty to say about the early days of the show. From questionable hair choices to heavily scripted scenes, Drew and Jonathan couldn’t help but cringe at some of what they saw.
A Look Back
The Scott twins sat down to rewatch the very first episode they ever filmed of their beloved renovation series and had a lot to say.
“Jonathan and I had these terrible hair choices. Now you were to blame for yours; I was not to blame for mine,” Drew teased in a video shared to YouTube. “This producer really wanted this Robert Pattinson fancy hair, and at the end of the day it looked terrible. I think she got fired for it.”
Jonathan teased, “Of that $550,000 renovation budget, half of that went toward his hairspray.”
“I don’t understand, like, when you look back at yourself years later, and you think, at the time you thought you were pretty cool, and I look back and I look at that, what was I thinking?” Drew laughed. “
Jonathan also spilled a long-kept secret about a third host.
So back in the day—don’t you remember—they hired a third host, and then they never used her on camera, but they used her audio for a while. Then eventually we just started doing the audio,” he shared.
“I remember for that first episode, you know, we had a bit of the jitters. We were a little bit nervous because we had never done hosting or TV like this before. We had done some small acting gigs in the past but we wanted to make sure we did a good job,” Drew explained. “Well in the beginning they had us being very staged like, ‘Hello, welcome to out house. We are the Property Brothers,'” he added in a robotic voice, calling to “awful.”
The ‘Biggest Jerk’
Drew recalled how in the early seasons, he was dubbed the “biggest jerk” as his role often required him to burst the homeowners’ dreams.
“That’s one of those things where I’m like, it was super scripted. They had us…play back and forth pretending like they want this, they can’t afford it. To me at the end of the day, I hate that. I just like it when Jonathan and I can just let loose and banter and have fun,” he explained.
Jonathan agreed, adding, “I cannot stand produced.”
“I like everything just to happen the way it actually happens, because renovations are interesting and scary and everything,” he said.
In the 15 years since “Property Brothers” premiered, Drew and Jonathan have built an empire. With shows like “Celebrity I.O.U.”, “Brother vs. Brother,” and “Buying and Selling,” Drew and Jonathan have shown no signs of slowing down. Jonathan has even filmed a pilot for a daytime talk show, “Better! With Jonathan Scott.”
