Joanna Gaines Shares How Her Whole Family Got Hooked on a Buzzworthy Hobby

Joanna Gaines and her family are totally bee crazy. The former HGTV star reveals how surprised she is that the whole family is into the honey harvesting process. Plus, they learned a lot on their beekeeping journey!

Joanna Gaines’ Family Is All in on Bees & Honey

On September 9, Gaines took to Instagram to share photos of her family hard at work harvesting honey.

“Last year’s honey harvest day is in this fall’s issue of #magnoliajournal,” she wrote in the caption.

Gaines continued, “When we brought home our first hives five years ago I never could have imagined how much the whole family would love being a part of the process. We really can’t get enough of these cutie bees and the magic they make  🐝.”

In an August 2 post, she shared a video of the whole family involved in every step of their harvest and the end result — a pile of jars filled with beautiful honey.

“Honey harvest day at the farm!🍯🐝✨” she wrote at the time. “The bees were hanging by the front door so we had to go in and out the side window, which made it a bit more challenging 🤣.”

Gaines added, “So proud of our bees, they work so hard🥹👏🏼.”

Joanna Gaines Shares the Timeline of Their Beekeeping Adventure

In a Fall 2025 Magnolia Journal article, Gaines gave some perspective about their journey to make that sweet honey.

“Four years ago, it was mostly an experiment. I’d become intrigued by the process of beekeeping, and of course, swooned at photos of honey dripping from the hive frames, overflowing in jars,” she wrote.

Gaines noted that the first year, three of their six hives failed and they didn’t harvest any honey.

She continued, “Year two was our first true harvest. That day, honey spilled out in every direction. I was amazed, surprised, and grateful all at once. Really, I couldn’t believe it had worked. We’d put in two years’ worth of effort, and the reward was far sweeter than I’d imagined.”

The “Magnolia Table” star noted that the hobby is a family affair and one that her children love.

“I couldn’t have anticipated my kids falling in love with beekeeping the way they have,” she wrote.

Gaines continued, “But to witness it grow their reverence for nature, their belief in wonder, their willingness to be nurturers for the good of nature and the bees, which in turn, becomes the good of us all, has made me more convinced than ever that this is how I want my kids to witness the world at work — hand in hand with us.”
