Former HGTV star and host of “Rehab Addict,” Nicole Curtis, shared a poignant reflection on being belittled by others not only in her adulthood but also in her childhood.
In an Instagram post from Sunday, March 8, Curtis opened up about being put down by others, noting that it shaped her into the powerful woman she is today.
“If I had a dollar for every time I was told to sit down, be quiet, go away, give up simply because I’m a woman — man, I could save every old building my eyes laid sight on,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself with a group of loved ones.
Nicole Curtis Talks About the Rarity of ‘True’ Friendship
“I dedicated the ending to this latest season of Rehab Addict to these ladies here not for the heck of it, but as a reminder that we rise as women when we raise each other up. I am so blessed to have, I would say, around 50 very close women I would tag as my bff…. And 100s of others that are just as valuable in my life,” she continued. “I’m lucky because we’ve found each other.”
Curtis went on to emphasize how difficult it is to find friends you can trust and keep in your corner for the long haul. “If you’re a woman — you know it’s not easy finding true friends that lift you, that guard your name when you are absent, sad, but true,” she wrote.
“We still live in a time where women are raised to step on each other to get ahead,” Curtis noted. “I’ve witnessed so much of it on my 49 years from childhood to even adulthood (the mean girls of high school grow up and find meaning in the PTA — no joke).”
Nicole Curtis Shares Words of Encouragement
The home-repair star ended her message by encouraging others to raise their daughters with dignity and treat women with the respect they wish to receive, adding that she’s been judged more times than she would have liked throughout her life.
“Ladies, be nice — our daughters, our nieces, they’re watching,” she said. “And, let me say what so many feel, but don’t want to be ostracized — I get judged by women more than men. Don’t believe me— I’ll share my DMs. Thank you to all the women in my life that break the boundaries and set the example for the next girls growing up ❤️❤️❤️.”
Curtis’ vulnerable post comes just weeks after she was fired from HGTV. The 49-year-old has been on the mend since, posting tidbits online of the work she’s been up to as she paves the way toward a new beginning — because for Curtis, when one door closes, another one opens. And for a home renovator, nothing beyond that door is unattainable.
