Before they were flipping and renovating homes, HGTV stars often had full careers before landing their big break. Some even worked as professional clowns before pivoting to a less-humorous job.
HGTV Stars Worked as Professional Clowns
Drew and Jonathan Scott are now some of the most popular faces in home renovation. With shows like “Celebrity IOU”, “Property Brothers Forever Home”, “Brother vs. Brother“, and more, the twins are synonymous with HGTV.
But before rising to fame, Drew and Jonathan, both 47, worked as professional clowns.
Drew’s clown name was “Curly,” while Jonathan went by “Dimples.”
Getty“At 8 years old, we started getting hired out as apprentice clowns, and we did that for years, until we were making like fifty bucks an hour,” Jonathan explained to People.
Drew added, “It was crazy. We were just sitting there buying candy for all our friends.”
According to The List, Jonathan called it quits on the clown life five years into their careers.
“I didn’t like doing all the makeup and all that, so eventually when I was around 13, I segwayed into doing more magic as opposed to the clowning and it built from there,” he reportedly explained.
Drew and Jonathan Scott Discuss Their Work Ethic
The Property Brothers sat down with their parents, Jim and Joanne Scott, to talk about life growing up on their ranch.
“You guys have a fantastic work ethic, and it all started with this business,” Joanne explained about her sons’ JAM Enterprises.
“We’ll take care of your hang-ups,” their tagline read.
The brothers explained that they came up with the idea after seeing a similar business at a church craft fair. They would take old hangers and decoratively wrap them in nylon before selling them for $1.25 each. They eventually added themed designs for Halloween, Christmas and more.
“You were entrepreneurs in the making,” the mother of three, who also shares son J.D. Scott with her husband, said of her sons.
While Drew and Jonathan no longer run their hanger business, they have no shortage of companies to keep them business.
In addition to their home renovation shows, the brothers jointly run Scott Brothers Global, their parent company, BrandJourney, a management company, as well as home furnishing companies Scott Living by Drew & Jonathan and Drew & Jonathan Home, to name a few.
Their brands are reportedly worth nearly $2 billion, according to Variety.
