5 Things That Will Surprise You About the Property Brothers

Jonathan and Drew Scott are the most successful stars on HGTV, with multiple series, endorsement deals and collabs with Rooms to Go, their own wallpaper and furniture lines, and more.

If you’re a fan of the Property Brothers, you’re no doubt aware of their HGTV shows “Forever Home,” “Don’t Hate Your House,” “Brother vs. Brother,” “Celebrity IOU,” “Backed By the Bros” and “Chasing the West.”

And maybe you’re even familiar thanks to their many posts on social media with their families.

But even so, there’s a lot more to these talented twins that you might realize.

Here are five things we bet you don’t know about the bros.

1. They’re Both Black Belts in Karate

Both Jonathan and Drew Scott are second-degree black belts in karate.

The twins have been studying the martial art since they were kids, and have both won multiple Canadian national championships.

According to Jonathan’s iMDb webpage, he is a 13 time Canadian Karate Champion, 9 time BC Martial Arts champion.

Drew’s iMDb webpage says he was “a Canadian National Karate champion for several years.”

Drew Scott recently got to show off his skills in the movie “Love Hurts” starring Ke Huy Quan.

In his cameo, Drew plays a realtor who uses his karate skills to come to the rescue of fellow realtor Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan) when an open house turns into a war zone.

2. Jonathan & Drew Are Academic Whiz Kids

The Property Brothers have made a lot of SMART career moves. And there’s a good reason for that.

Jonathan Scott is an actual genius. As in he’s a member of MENSA International. To become a member, a person has to score in the top two percent on an approved, standardized intelligence test like the SAT or the Mensa Admission Test.

And he’s used some of that brain power to learn multiple languages. Jonathan told Us Weekly in 2017, “I can speak Farsi, Spanish, French and Japanese.”

And twin brother Drew is no slouch in the brains department either.

The designer told Us Weekly in 2017, “In high school, I excelled at problem-solving and calculating so much that I actually completed the various grades of math in just two weeks each.”

Drew also put that brain-power to work studying kinesiology, which is the study of human physical activity and movement.

3. Both Jonathan & Drew Have Tried Their Hand at Acting

In addition to Drew Scott’s turn in the movie “Love Hurts,” where he got to show off his karate skills, both brothers have had plenty of other experience- even before they became HGTV stars.

Drew Scott served as a stand-in for Tom Welling on the show “Smallville.”

And Jonathan appeared in the popular FOX series “The X-Files.”

As a teenager, Jonathan also had a successful career as a magician.

In the twins’ 2017 autobiography, “It Takes Two: Our Story,” Jonathan wrote, “At 16, I won 3rd Best Stage Performer in the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians magic competition. That’s right: I was officially an Olympian of magic. Well, in my head, at least.”

Both Property Brothers made money performing as clowns in their teen years.

And both appeared in the Canadian tv series “Breaker High” with fellow Canadian Ryan Gosling.

And at least one of the brothers, Drew, would like to expand his acting resume.

While promoting his role in “Love Hurts,” Drew told the U.S. Sun he’d love to be the next James Bond, saying, “”I won’t pretend I can do a Sean Connery impression. I won’t even try and I am Scottish. It would be very funny.”

He also likes the idea of being the next Batman. He said, “So we’re with Warner Brothers Discovery on HGTV, and when they were looking for a new Batman, I always thought I can step in there. I have a bit of that Ben Affleck look….come on. We will see.”

4. One of the Bros Likes Reality TV Better Than the Other

Drew competed on Season 25 of “Dancing With the Stars” in 2017.

He and professional dancer Emma Slater made it all the way to the first night of the finale before being eliminated. He ultimately placed fourth in the competition.

But brother Jonathan is less enthusiastic about being on reality television- at least, some kinds of reality television.

According to US Weekly, Jonathan says he’s been approached “multiple times” to be “The Bachelor” on ABC, and has turned it down every time.

“I said my third no to being the Bachelor about a month ago,” Jonathon told Us Weekly. “I cannot. That is absolutely not me. I would love something like ‘Amazing Race.’ [It] would be fun … but not ‘The Bachelor’.”

5. Jonathan & Drew Started Building Their Success Early

While they may not have understood just how much success it would ultimately bring them, Jonathan and Drew Scott saw the potential in a career in home renovations early on.

In an Instagram post, Drew wrote, “We started getting into real estate during college as a flexible side hustle to fund our creative passions. We bought our first house at 18 and flipped it for a $50k profit.”
